Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Fixed my strange temp gauge readings. I had replaced the gauge sender unit and had all sorts of strange things going on. It would peg the gauge on warmup until the thermostat opened then read mid scale which was higher then before. Driving it the readings would vary all over the place. Engine was running normal as I was checking it with a thermo gun. Ended up taking the thermostat out, drilled 2 1/8" holes in it and then filling the engine with coolant at the manifold prior to reinstalling the thermostat. Works great now. Only thing I can figure is that I had some sort of air pocket that refused to work itself out.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

I finally sat down and starting cleaning some of the LS parts. The intake, front and rear covers were disgusting. The inside of the valve covers as well as valley covers where pretty bad too. I gave the trans the ole wire brush treatment and consolidated all of the parts in the bed.

Very nice Colt,
If I may ask, what product/vendor are the fillers and particularly the filler cap over the top of the radiator?
Thanks,
Sam

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Last week I moved it from beside the shop to the front of the houses driveway and cleaned all the leaves of of it. Then I cleaned out my shop enough to get it inside. Then we had a bit of a freeze so last night I put my daily in the shop and tonight I put the GMC back beside the shop to get covered with leaves and gunk again. Poor thing .

How hard was it to pull the doghouse off? I have looked for detailed steps online but couldn't find anything. I need to pull mine off to put the motor and trans back in easier. And to clean things up a little. I have an 8 ft garage so the lift will not get high enough to clear the grill.

I got my upper bed moldings. They were delivered to my rental property as that's where my truck is stored. But with the ice and cold Im sitting it out next to my woodstove with a nice glass Tullamore Dew. But I'm going to Buffalo this weekend to look at a big block 68 .

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

I "winterized" Old Red today. Replaced the "mags" with the ralleys and while I had the rear wheels off I replaced the brake shoes and painted the new drums I bought at Auto Zone. I've never liked the drums I got at NAPA, they were not concentric, and causing a pesky vibration. I'll finish buttoning her up tomorrow after the paint on the drums is dry and take her for a test drive.

Phil, what did you paint your drums with? When I looked at the inside of the drums, I thought the blue tape was a reflection off of "highly polished" braking surfaces... Ha. Truck looks sharp!

Jocko, sorry for the slow reply, I don't look around here too regularly. The paint I used is Eastwood Extreme Chassis Black in Satin, also used their Chassis Black Primer. It's a pretty durable epoxy. I had it left over from when I painted my frame. Thanks for the kudos on my truck.

Talking Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

I traded some old 4 lug pony car wheels and tires for these to go on the front of my ramp truck. The guy said he bought them in 1970 and has had them on several trucks.
They aren't perfect but they are perfect for the ramp truck!

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.
