Can Someone Help Me??

Ok guys I've got a few questions for you, I recently found what i believe to be a 73 to 78 disc brake frame. The frame is also 5lug and my 1970 is 6 lug. I was wondering if the disk brake stuff would fit.

1.) Will the spindles bolt right up on my 1970 GMC?
2.) Is 5 lug spindles the same as 6 lug spindles, so I could just swap rotors or no?
3.) Would the hoses have to be for a 73-78 or could it be for a 1970?

Thanks in advance guys.

Hey Mitch,
To answer your questions, I will also add some additional information.

1. Yes the Spindle bolt up to your 70 A Arms but you will have to change the ball joints because the ball joints from a Drum brake is different then the spindles for a disc brake. You will also need the proportioning valve from the 73 - 87 truck because you have the drums at all 4 corners and the 73 - 87 all had disc front drum rears. Considering you have the 67 - 72 Motor Mount towers, I would suggest take the whole front cross member off of the 73 - 87 frame.. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/techtips...ension_1b.html check out this.. Plus you will get the 73 - 87 motor mounts which in my opinion are better then the 67 - 72 even though it make it a bit harder to put the engine in to the truck.

2. read what I wrote in 1.

3. You can still use all the brake lines for a 71 - 72 because they are going to be different with disc brake.

Also another note since your front end will be 5 lug and your rear end will has 6 lugs you have one of 2 choices. Now is your gmc leaf spring or coil?? I ask because Leaf Springs are stock on gmc frames and coil springs were optional. If leaf springs, you can just swap the entire rear end and have 5 lug all the way around. If your frame is coil springs with trailing arms like 90% of the chevrolet 2 wd frames, since you do have a 70 rear end, crack it open and remove the c-clips and pull out your 6 lug axles and install the 5 lug axles *if they are good* into your 70 rear end. I do know 70 - 87 rear ends were the same width where as 67 - 69 were around an inch or 2 wider.

HTH,
Charlie

he bud lucky for you i am putting 5lug disk brakes on my 69c20 now. the front clip is also 73-78,i well lay on you what i have learned and problems i've ran into.
1.yes the spindles well swap over.
2. the things you well need, new ball joints 73-78 (upper and lower), and re-use the tie-rods from the 73-78 front end
3. the upper controll arm well take a 73-78 ball joint nicely, hower the problem i ran into with my c20 (keep in mind it may only be with c20s) the opening in which the lower ball joint sets was too big for the 73-78 c10 ball joint. so i just dropped the U-bolts and replaced the lower controll arm with the 73-78 arm.
4. yes you could do a compleat crossmember swap but thats too much work.
5. the advantage you have with going 5 lug is rims are cheaper and easer to find for our body styles.
6. seeming how your a youngin' like me your not even close to having your truck where you want it, and the benefit you get from leaving your front end og as possible allows for a better result when it come to ordering a lower kit.

hope this helped bud, a how to thread is comming soon. just about done with my swap. just need to replace the brake pads , bleed the brakes and put my tires back on tonight. any questions feel free to drop me a message.

GATE CITY, Va. What part? I'm not to far from you.
I'm not 100% sure, But I believe you can un bolt the a-frames and swap over to your 70 frame and bolt right up. you will need to swap the rubber brake lines because going from drum to disc they are different.

Re: Can Someone Help Me??

On the C-10 1/2 ton's the 73 and newer lower ball joint fits fine in the 67-70 lower a-arm, you will need the center link from the 73 as well.

thanks for clearing that up for me bud, i was thinking about taking the 73 lower arms out some where down the line just for the sake of having the right period parts.. as for now ill just run what i put under.
