Ground strap locations
I crawled around under the truck on Sat for a while looking for the ground straps. I also went through the assembly manual several times and only came up with the engine to firewall locations. I found 4 of them but could not find the last one ( if you buy any of the kits you get 5). With help from some folks on here and an email to GMCPaul, I am hoping this last one will do the trick. I used the book for the engine locations, sorry I am still working under the truck. Pics 1 and 2 are the V8 and I6 locations. Pic 3 is in front on the pass. side inner fender. Pic 4 is under the pass. door about halfway. Last one is from GMCPaul and Shyguy, pass. side behind the tire. I hope this will help those that need it. I searched on here and the web and did not find much info other than the firewall locations. A thank you goes out to those who helped with my other thread.

Re: Ground strap locations
I remember when I took my truck apart there was a ground wire bolted to the rad support between the battery box and the radiator.I just don't recall where it went to.

Re: Ground strap locations
Ground strap kits are a good way to go for restoration purposes. If you just need to make sure you are well grounded use any battery (I perfer black) cable about 12 inches long and run from head or motor mount to the frame, clean contacts of course.

Re: Ground strap locations
My thoughts exactly. Since I am not for a pure restoration I am going to make up my own ground straps on both of my trucks.

Re: Ground strap locations
I made my own and for the back of the motor I used some ground straps I had lying around from the heads to the frame and I think they look pretty darn good if you ask me.. I also put some where the original ones were under the Cab to the frame.

Re: Ground strap locations
Bigger on grounds is always better. Also, ground strap flat wire uses very small strands. This is good for two reasons:
1. Electricity mainly flows on the surface of the conductor, so more strands means more surface area and less resistance. 2. Thinner strands are less likely to harden and break from movement between the frame and engine.

Re: Ground strap locations
What is the biggest reason for having so many grounding straps? My 70 C10 has only 2 that I have seen, one strap from the firewall to a valave cover bolt and the negative battery terminal to the engine block. Do I need to run the body/bed straps to the frame?

Re: Ground strap locations
The more clean ground straps you have the less electrical problems you will have down the road.

Re: Ground strap locations
Thanks for the quick reply Vidman, I'll go ahead and ground the bed and cab to the frame and see how that works.

Re: Ground strap locations
a light bulb needs a wire (+) takin the voltage to the filament// after the voltage gets to the filament it needs a path(-) to ground in order for the filament in the bulb to glow and light up

Re: Ground strap locations
With fresh paint and powdercoat i was having problems getting anything grounded.
I used a "grounding" washer, this way you get down to bare metal without having to grind away paint etc... |
