Tilted (hood tilt build thread)

Well it is not a new idea but I needed a new hinge set up to clear my front tires when the airs out and the frames down. I will be doing a write up for others that want to do this to their truck. I have only the front mocked up right now and I am headed out to built the rear slider latches. This step is one I have not seen any other person complete and post pics of so we will see how it goes. Wish me luck, I want to have it finished up tonight for the mock up stage then I can build the final mounts and give dimentions.

The factory slider/hooks work great Now I just need to pull it all back apart and build the final mounting brackets and clean everything up for viewing

I've been wanting to do the exact same thing! Now I'll know how a "Professional" does it.

Re: Tilted (hood tilt build thread)

Thanks guys I will be building the finish brackets in the morning and try and have it done before quiting time. It will almost be a full bolt-in kit. It will require Two pieces to be welded to the radiator support and 2-4 nuts to be welded to the front brace of the hood. I will make templete's of all the parts for later use. As of now I do not plan on doing any kind of a kit for sale but I would like to do a write up for the board.

Re: Tilted (hood tilt build thread)

Do you think any dimensions would have to be changed for a 67/68 front end? Is the front underside of the hood different on the 67/68 hood?

TIA - Bob

This is a 67-68 front end! Now if you ment 69-72 then no I do not know yet if it is the same. I plan on doing one for my 70 2wd Blazer as well but that will not be for some time.

I would love to see / have a copy of your templates for the mounts (front & rear).

This is the mid 80's Buick LeSabre hinge and latch, right?

Question: are you still going to use the factory truck front latch as well?

I am goint to try it first and see about doing a remote latch off of it but may end up using a different style. The stock one will work fine because the hood movement is just like stock for the first 6" of opening. It really is cool because it starts off just like stock then rolls forward about 12" then just tilts up and over the front grill

Nope I can not stand that look, and it is a pain in the arss to work on a tilt front end car. Most of what I build has a good reason behind it like this hood. Now I can go even lower than before with out my tires rubbing

But if you want to do a flip frontend without a fender seam you will need to have your front pivit lower than the rear bottom portion of your fender so when it starts to lift tehfirst action is forward and away from the body and not into it. For this reason it would only work out ok on a 4x4. Here is a quick pic. The pink line shows the pivit point that will pull the fender away from the door as soon as it starts to lift but needs to be low to the ground. The blue color shows how if the pivit is raised up the fender will run right into the door as it lifts. This is why you see fenders cut at an angle and a raised up pivit piont on 2wds. Not to mention your cowl would need to be modified to work as well. Hope this clears things up

Re: Tilted (hood tilt build thread)

Kevin - My BAD. Looking back I can clearly see the 68 GMC hood. I apologize for making you waste your time replying to my stupid posting. If I had opened my eyes in the beginning this would not have been necessary.

Sorry - Bob

What cut are you talking about? Their are two small tack welds on this hood and that is it! The rest is a bolt on deal I will show more pics tonight as I finish it up.

Sorry Bob~ No problem, now people know it may not work on a 69-72 as it is curently built! All's good

Here it is, I posted it in the blazer forum since it is a bit slower I had time to get it all on here before people started responding. As far as opening you just use your stock latch

Re: Tilted (hood tilt build thread)

Rok why do you feel that a complete flip frt would be harder to work on. I want to do this as it would alllow easy accese to the motor if done properly like an 18 wheeler. I would be will to work some thing out with you if you would be intrested.

I guess i would ask the same ? I am running a split tilt (steel), & really think that tune ups, repairs, ect are much simpler. shes a little crude....hood pins under the fenders to hold the mess shut, no hydraulics(manual lift only), but here are the pics....
http://community.webshots.com/user/hotrodhorn L BTW....damn nice work on that hood!
