check out my new project k-20 body swap

After doing my first body swap I've been itching to do another.I found this one on craigslist It's got a .060 350 with double humps and a mild towing cam. It's got saddle interior which is one of my favorites. The paint looks good but has a few scratches and rust bubbles here and there.I hope you enjoy Mike

Cool Mike. Can't wait to see how this one turns out. What's the plans? Leave it stock looking or lift, tires, etc? Going with a 4 speed or auto? BTW,it looks like you're missing a few parts from the transfer case

Yeah I'm going to go a little on the modified side but just slightly the frame has a set of the blackbirds rear disc brakes and a 4 inch lift I got a set of super swamper 34x9.50s already mounted on a stock set of 16x6s ready to go.I mounted them for my blue one but they look to big on it with no lift so I'll use them on this one.I'd love to put a 4 speed in it but I still havn't put my hands on one yet maybe if i can get that swb4x4 roller from billsbowtie in time I can use that one and use the 350/205 that i already have in the swb thanks Mike

I was hoping you were going to leave the slots on it for the retro look! Looks like a great start to another project.

love those 5 slots! I need to find something like that for when my 33x12.50x15s wear out, and go with a narrower tire/wheel combo.

That`s gonna be nice.I can never decide on one set of wheels. It makes sense to just have a few choices.

Re: check out my new project k-20 body swap

Looks like a solid truck to work with. I too am anxious to see your progress. Your blue and white one looks sweet! That was a swap?

I am somewhat new here and have recently purchased a '71 3/4 ton frame thats been all gone through. I plan to take my current '70 3/4 ton 4 speed 2x body and swap onto this frame. Trouble is this frame was originally set up for an auto. I have a 4 speed and a Rockwell from a '69 including the crossmember etc. My understanding is that the holes for the crossmember are a few inches off due to the '71 being set up for the 205. I have been told there is no way around re-drilling holes or locate '71/'72 parts. Do any of you have any input on this?

Just previous to purchasing this frame I got all new exhaust put on my 2x. I would imagine the transfer case will now interfere with this. I believe my manifolds dump out at an angle as opposed to the ones that dump straight down. Is there any way around this on a 4x4 chassis?

I would like to give this a 2-4" lift to give it a good stance. What's the best method (yet economical) to go about this?

One more question regarding the gear ratio's of K20's - can I assume they are all 4:10's or 4:56's? I haven't checked these yet but it would be great if they were under 4:10's. Anybody know?

Thanks!

By the way, we have had that white crap on the ground for 2 solid months now! Sucks for trying to get projects like this done.

Re: check out my new project k-20 body swap

Hittman,
I'm no expert on all this I'm just starting to figure all the 4x4 stuff out
My blue truck was a body swap it was a 85,000 mile 1/2 ton 2wd thanks for the compliment.

on the crossmember issue I would think that the right holes would be drilled from the factory but like i said I'm pretty new at the 4x4 stuff.

I would think that the exhaust would be different on the 2wd you may could find a shop that would use the rear part of the system and just re-run the head pipes.

There are some cheap lift kits on e-bay from time to time expect to pay 400-500 for a basic 4 inch lift sometimes you can find used ones on this message board

on the gearing every 71-72 3/4 ton 4x4 that I've dealt with had 4.11 gears in them but I would believe that any gear ratio could have been ordered

Re: check out my new project k-20 body swap

Thanks for your input DST. I am anxious to get started on it. I should be picking up the frame next week. Now I just have to figure out the logistics of transfering all the parts. The weather has not been too friendly around these parts lately and doesn't look like it will break any time soon.

How soon are you planning to swap the "new" one? I'll look forward to seeing your progress. I hope post with my progress if I can just get this project jump started.

Good luck!

By the way - how does one attach photos to a post? I am rather illiterate with these things.

Thanks
Chris

Re: check out my new project k-20 body swap

Hittman on the last one we used a 2 post to lift the cab+frontend off and we manually lifted the bed.

to post pictures click the post reply link then scroll down and click manage attachments then a new window will open click brouse then scroll through you pictures until you find the one you want to post and click it then click upload and it will post them but the resizing is what is a pain hopefully they will be small enough to post DST

Re: check out my new project k-20 body swap

I am planning on converting my C20 to K20 when I return from this deployment so I was wondering if you could do me some favors. Could you take a few pics of the rear section of the frame and some measurements like how far the spring hanger is from body mounts? I am going to use the DIY4x4 brackets for the front but with mine being a coil sprig rear I need to know where the hangers go. Thanks

Is that the same Chevelle you had in previous threads? New quarters and a complete redo. Keep us posted on that build also. The frame looks good for that bodyswap.

Jim,no that's another Chevelle that is being restored at the body shop that my buddy works at.Here are a couple pictures of mine I finally got it running but have only drove it once I need to replace a few wheel studs on the back.I think if everthing goes good I may keep it and build a 496 big block for it so I can go racing once a month or so thanks Mike
