Got it home!

I am new to the board and just got home today from picking up my 1970 GMC SB. I have been trying to buy this truck for 7 years.
The truck is in overall very good condition. I got two rust free doors, a new tailgate, new trim panels, some new moldings and a set of ralley wheels and tires with the truck.
It was 1379 miles each way but well worth the trip. Could not have made it in 3 days without my son's help! I am looking forward to working on this truck with him.

Looks good. May your rust be minimal, and your panels be staight.

And welcome to the board.

Re: Got it home!

By the way what is the story about trying to get it for seven years? That exact truck or that style in general? I love a good truck story with a happy ending.

Well its a long story, but the short version is that my best friend bought the truck about 8 years ago. I have always liked the body style and wanted to buy it then. About the same time I was transferred with my job 1400 miles north. I was able to combine a business trip with some personal time and went to see him 2 weeks ago. He said he had decided to sell the truck and was just waiting to tell me it was mine! At this point I want it as much for sentimental reasons as because I like the truck. I called my son and asked if he wanted to make a road trip and he said yes. So we left this past Wednesday and got back home today.

Re: Got it home!

Thanks everyone,

I have a few questions.
Why is it that I rarely see a GMC truck but see plenty of Chevy's? I have heard that a lot of people will even convert a GMC into a Chevy by changing the grills etc?

Is it true that GMC had a different rear suspension than Chevy?

Is the GMC considered more "rare"?

This truck originally had a 350 but it blew a few years ago and my friend put a 1970 396 big block in as a replacement. I like originality but since the motor came from a 1970 truck (as did the extra doors) I think it is cool. Your thoughts?

Again, I do not plan on ever selling this truck and it will become my sons at some point.

Thanks,

Re: Got it home!

By the way, my son's Tahoe with 102,000 miles made the 3000 mile trip with no problems! It did like to make frequent stops for gas which put a hurt on Dad's wallet! It pulled a heavy trailer and heavy truck with no problem! Thanks Son! (and daughter in-law!)

By the way, if anyone from U-Haul is watching that is actually a 2000 Accord with a body graphic applied to make it look like a truck!

Thanks,
Yes, GMC's had leaf springs in the rear instead of coils.

There's about as many GMC's on the road as Chevy's and now that you have one, you'll notice more of them.

I know people that have actually converted their grills from Chevy to GMC

Re: Got it home!

GMC or Chevy could be either leaf or coil depending on how they were ordered.
