starter stays engaged

A friend of mine just finished putting his '72 truck back together, when he tries to start it the starter keeps cranking and he has to manually turn the key all the way to the off position to get it to stop turning over. Is there a simple wiring problem? Thanks

Re: starter stays engaged

Have him make sure the purple starter wire is terminated on the inner post of the solenoid. The purple wire should be the only wire hooked to the post. (The outer post is for the yellow coil wire).

Sometimes if the starter gears are meshing too tightly the starter will keep turning over, also.

Re: starter stays engaged

Good call on the one wire thing.

But whenever I had the starter gears too tight, it wouldn't stop cranking until I disconnected the battey cable!

Re: starter stays engaged

I had the same thing happen to me. I shimmed the starter and it works fine now.
