Drive Shaft problems
Hello all,
I have a question about a drive shaft. (again) I was wondering how hard it is to replace the carrier baring and two peice drive shaft. I have a 68 swb with a granny low four speed. The original tranny was three on the tree and it had a single driveshaft. My existing is too short. I am trying to stay away from having one built. (just had a baby) money is low. And I intend to put an auto in someday when I do the rebuild. I just want to drive the truck for a while now. If it is easier to replace it with a two peice and the carrier baring I'll go that rout. Any suggestions would be great. Also if the two peice is the key. Any suggestions were to find one. My local junk yards have few 67-72's and most are LWB's. This is the last major piece to finish to get it road worthy and has become quite frustrating. Thanks, Smiley |

I'm Not To Sure About What You Are Trying To Accomplish ,but Locally Here, You Can Get A Drive Shaft Retubed & Balanced For About The Price Of Two Tanks Of Gas. (around $100) John

Removing the u-joints just needs some pliers, sockets, and a good size vice. Pulling the yoke off the carrier bearing, so to speak, can be difficult, but if you pull the u-joints yourself, having a driveshaft shop just pull the yoke (if necessary) would reduce costs considerably. The service manual has some procedures and pics of the process. Good link above, too.
Greasable U-joint crosses should be ~$13 x3. I found the donut style carrier bearing at my local bearing sales for ~$22. Auto parts stores wanted at least $5 more. Your post confused me some. Does your truck already have the carrier bearing crossmember? I ask because you said the truck had a single piece driveshaft when it had the 3-speed which would necessitate the removal or cutting of the carrier bearing crossmember.

I'm lazy, i just drop off at the driveshaft shop and pick it up a day or so later but i do paint it myself
