Tailgate difference's questions

I have a couple of questions. First is the 67-72 "GM Licensed" fleetside tailgate through a GM dealer the same Goodmark one sold through the others catalogs? How can I spot the difference between a goodmark gate and a real GM one. I have a non lettered goodmark one now and I would be afraid to sit on it, being so flimsy. I have one that is alot heavier but shows alot of spot welds on the sides, is this a goodmark one? Thanks, Dave

Re: Tailgate difference's questions

The ones sold by Goodmark are not made by them. Goodmark makes nothing. Neither are the tailgates you buy from GM now. They are all aftermarket. The ones sold by Gm are made in TW now to. You can tell by the welding is one way to tll between OEM and GM approved restoration parts.

There has been a post on here a long time ogo about the subject. I can take a picture of the aftermarket GM restoration approved but I don't have the stock gate available at this time.

Re: Tailgate difference's questions

I'm guessing the name stamped one I bought at a swap meet is a aftermarket one. It is alot more heavy duty and better than my non-stamped one but does have alot of spotweld dimples along the outside edge. Just trying to determine what it is. I would like to see a picture of your GM restoration tailgate to see if the dimples are in it too. Thanks again, Dave

Re: Tailgate difference's questions

GM (OEM) has the spot welds on the actual gate about an 1"-1 1/2" from the edge, and through the center recess to join the 2 pieces, and the reproductions have spot welds on the outside edge joining the 2 pieces. Cheers, Trevor

I've got two OEM gates and a supposed NOS piece that have the spot welds within a 1/2 from the edge, so now I'm , .
