10 bolt question
Hey guys, I'm new here, and the new owner of a 68 GMC shortbed. The question I have for you is: Mine has a 10 bolt rear end, and I was wondering why? Aren't most 12 bolt? What rear end is this, assuming it's factory? I'm new to these trucks, but not to hot rods, so please be tolerant of my ignorance. I'm looking into installing a "posi" unit, and can't find this rear listed in any JEG's or Summit mags. Kind of looks like a Dana 44.
Thanks, Scott Last edited by old geezer; 04-08-2008 at 11:38 PM. |

Re: 10 bolt question
send a pic and look for numbers on the axle or center area...
12 bolt was stock so someone swapped it more than likely, maybe they wanted the gearing or it was from a car.... who knows.

Re: 10 bolt question
I'll get a few pics of the rear up soon, but no, it was a 307/3 speed truck.
It's now a 355/4speed truck. Had an "expert" look uder it last night, and he was amazed that it had leaf springs, then he realized it was a GMC. Guess he was just a Chevy "expert". |

Re: 10 bolt question
Looks like a great start for a cool ride! Welcome to the board from north Georgia! I guess there's always the possibility of it having a rearend out of a later 4x4 under it. They were 6 lug 10 bolts that were used with leaves. I've got no idea if it would even work. But it's hard to say without pics.

Re: 10 bolt question
It could be a Dana 44. Some were used in GMC half tons from the factory.

Re: 10 bolt question
Here's my rear....
Looking more and more like the 44. On another note...Is there anything odd about this seat? PO(previous owner) said he ordered the truck with this seat. I've been told it's rare... Thanks for your time and info. |

Re: 10 bolt question
Nice truck. Those are buddy bucket seats. Only in 1967-1968 Not really rare, but not real common either. Nice option. A set of them in your condition would sell from $500 up.

Re: 10 bolt question
Welcome from Kent, WA. Really nice looking project. I was going to tell you that those seats are very strange and I would trade you a nice new bench seat for them...LOL! That's a find!

Re: 10 bolt question
Yes - that's what they usually came with.
