67 Disc Conversion (I have a complete 84 Rolling Chassis)
First time to post on a forum so hope I do this right. I have a 1967 Chevy LWB that I am wanting to switch over to disc brakes (We are doing a frame up on the truck). I also have a 1984 rolling chassis for a donor truck. Is it possible to just switch the cross member and all from the 2 trucks? Has anyone done this? If so what are the things that I should be prepared to do? (Do I have to pull the motor. Things like that) I would also like to drop the front of the truck 2 inches. Do I need to go ahead and buy drop spindles or can I do this by cutting a coil from the spring.

Welcome! You are in the right place. There is so much good info on this forum and everyone is very helpful. I have not done it personally but yes your donor truck should be perfect. The cross member will swap right over to your 67. Try a search and you will find what you need or the gurus will come in and help you out. Oh yeah we need some pics please.

The whole crossmember swaps over.Make sure to get the booster and MC and proportioning/residual valve from the donor.There is a hole or two per side that needs either reaming or drilled.There should be a write up in the FAQ's section (trucks).Should also be a write up on pic posting,and most other posting questions in the FAQ's (site related)Make sure to read and use the one on pics(we's pic hoe's here).

BTW my 67 has power brakes currently so will I need the different valve and MC? (I ask as I forgot to get the valve and it was only the chassis nothing else. Also I did not cut the leaf spring mounds from the chassis (again was not thinking) so what do you all suggest.
Also the truck has the upgraded rear end (Stabilizer bar and overloads from the factory) is it possible to do a rear axle swap to a 5 lug to match the front. Recommendations. Last edited by Original67; 12-10-2009 at 11:26 AM. Reason: For Sale |

You can use a rearend out of a 71/72 or have your 67 axles redrilled to the 5 lug pattern

Okay let me make sure that I understand correctly. 71/72 1/2ton trucks are 5 lug with coils right? or did they come with both? Since I have a coil truck already this will bolt right into the existing location correct. If this is the case what would be a fair price for a rear end in the OKC area do you guys think. Or would a swap for an 84 5 lug leaf be fair? I want to make sure that I do this right the first time and not screw it up as it is the boys truck and he has the budget of a 15 year old.. yea right.
Sorry for all the questions. I have always worked on 4x4 and never found the need for an axel swap. |

Most chevy trucks came with coils. the 71/72 rearend is a direct replacement for your 67 6lug rear

You can buy a complete Disk brake conversion and remain 6 lug. Then you do not have to change the crossmember. When you buy the disk brake conversion, specify 2 1/2" lowering spindles and you wont have to do anything with your springs. You will however still have to deal with the master cylender and proportioning valve. There are a couple of ways to do that. One is just install an adjustible proportiong valve somewhere between your exusting proportioning valve and the rear brakes, and the other is to buy a mastercylinder/booster set up for disk front brakes along with a non adjustible proportiong valve and bracket. Since you have already pulled the complete cradle from the 83, I would use it. You gain a few things with the 83 over just converting to discs. The later A-arms have rubber bushings, better ride, better steering. Parts are cheaper to replace and MUCH easier to find locally. Remember to swap the entire cradle,drag link, and tie rods. If you already have a booster, just get a 71-72 MC from NAPA or your favorite box store. The proportioning valve can be found in any junk yard or Master Power Brakes. http://www.mpbrakes.com/
Go to MPB site even if you don't want their prop valve. They are full of information. You can also buy 6 lug rotors from McGaughys if you want to stay with 6 lugs. Some of the board vendors carry McGaughys. Lowering spindles and/or springs can be had from most of the board vendors too. Just some thoughts from someone who has been there, done that, got grease on the T shirt.

Okay maybe I am having a blonde moment or even just a moment. So hear it goes anyway. Can I buy 6 lug rotors to fit an 84 spindle. I have to replace the rotors calipers hoses anyway so if I can do this it will keep me from having to do something in the rear. If so what year fits? Will the bearings need to be 84 or will they need to be for whatever the rotors are for. Please tell me this will work. Oh please Oh please Oh Please.
