AT column shifter
Figured I would pick some of your brains here, search wasn't any help to me.
I am working on a 72 with a column shifted automatic trans, non-tilt. The shift mechanism seems to be frozen, I am unable to pull the shift lever back towards me to change gears. Any comments or hints on this condition? I would like to get this shifter working like new, maybe someone could also address sloppy detents and pointer positioning as well. It seems like the perfect time to put in a tilt, but this is a friends truck and he wants it stock... Thanks in advance! Chris |

You need to change out the 90W gear lube and refill with a 30W column lube. Check very close at the bottom of the column and you will find a 3/8" bung plug that allows you to drain the column. You refill it from under the horn button. Have fun!

Ok, seriously now. I pop the tapered pin on the shift handle and remove. Then add generous amounts of your favorite spray lube. As it works it's way down the column it will free up. Insert the shifter and run it through a few shifts and repeat. If you really want to do it right you can disassemble and lithium lube the steering shaft, but the above method will get a couple years of use until it drys out again.

had the same problem took the steering wheel off and shot some WD40 down the column. Solved the problem.

what about the halogen fluid? I havent changed mine since I got them been a few years.
