Question about value and paint schemes
I'm wishy washy as heck when it comes to the paint scheme for my truck. Been that way for decades. The original color of this truck is a ochre and white two-tone, no molding, just a paint separator...........That's out, I'm not doing it.
Option 1. So then I jumped on the ochre/white deluxe (4 tone). Full moldings. It's obviously not per the SPID, but it's close. Ochre is NOT my favorite color for these trucks, but it's a beautiful scheme regardless. Option 2. So I've recently pondered a dark blue 523 and white two-tone or four-tone deluxe. Lower and/or upper side moldings for either one. I like the color more than ochre, and IMO, the 523 is the best looking stock color under the hood. Pretty awesome interior as well. Definitely not per the SPID, but neither is the sport bumper and mirrors. I'm never going to sell this truck. But I'm interested in your opinions of which is more valuable, Option 1 or 2. On a side note, blue would be the last color I'd choose for a newer vehicle. But from Mopar to Chevy, it may be my favorite color for 67-72.

Re: Question about value and paint schemes
I think it'd be worth more in a non-original desirable color than in Ochre, if Ochre is really not a high-popularity color (I have no opinion on it).
I do, however, have an opinion on 592, which is that it's the best color scheme out there! You will love it. You said you're not going to sell it anyway, so why drive an Ochre truck when you can have White & Dark Blue! But 523 is also very nice - see the post after mine for a link to a decent pic (I thought 523 was what I had, but it's a different dark blue). (Again, I don't even know what Ochre is, other than it sounds like you'd eat it with grits, so I'm not bashing the color) As for new cars, well, a friend of mine just bought a Laser Blue Colorado and they make the Corvette Z06 in blue, and you can even get a blue interior. Ignore the light blue dash pad, I redyed it 508 blue after that pic was taken.

Re: Question about value and paint schemes
great question, i feel the same way about my truck. mine was black. i LOVE black but i hate the idea of maintaining black. i agree with davepl's first statement. i think you will have just as much value with a non-original color if it's done right. i think the blue will be awesome.

Re: Question about value and paint schemes
Out of the two choices, to me it's ochre all the way. Love that color!

Re: Question about value and paint schemes
I say Blue and white. It's hard to beat a nice blue, and easy to sell. Although you will never sell it. I think ochre is an acquired taste, I used to dislike it but now I love it. Go figure.

Re: Question about value and paint schemes
*Most* guys say they never sell, and most end up doing so.
As with any car/truck, the colors that sell well are red, white, blue, and black. Anything that's green, yellow, pink, orange, brown, etc seems to need "the right buyer" to sell it. That said, I LOVE blue, 3 of 4 vehicles I own are blue and the 4th is white with a full blue interior.

Re: Question about value and paint schemes
Actually, I see ochre trucks get a great positive reaction here and elsewhere. If you don't like it all that much I understand you wanting to change it, since it's your keeper. BTW, a 4-tone would have four colors. In this case "tone" means "color", not how many separations. What you are considering is a deluxe 2-tone. Is dark blue the only other color that turns your head away from ochre? Look around real good before buying the paint. I learned a long time ago, with all the foresight and planning, I never say the color paint till I buy it. Of course, if you already have an interior, the color might limit options

Re: Question about value and paint schemes
I'd submit ochre is a desirable color (several I've passed on for whatever reason that I regret.. Probably the most subdued git r dun truck color in my opinion, maybe that perception is why I like it. But anyway... I digress). As for value - I'd suggest it goes in this order:
1) original paint 2) a repaint of the original paint 3) a repaint of the original paint colors in a different scheme 4) a repaint with color change Main reason is that originality matters. And while most would love an original paint truck, the second option is acceptable in a resto. However, in the end, the trump card is what YOU want. If you want a white & dk blue truck and you plan to keep it (as stated, but then why are you asking about value?) - it's a GREAT choice. Also one of my favorite color combos. Dk blue is not common and it looks great with either parchment or blue interiors. Anyway, I guess my only 2 cents would be that if you happened to be planning to sell it anytime soon and were considering the color change for resale - I'd definitely stick with the original colors and scheme. Might matter to your buyer pool and ochre might be that person's favorite color even if it's not yours. Not sure I explained what I was trying to. Bottom line, if you want to keep it and want a specific color, that's the beauty of these trucks - they look great no matter what. There's nothing wrong with changing a color. Just don't leave the interior panels ochre if you do... I guess the real question is this: If you plan to never sell it, why are you concerned with value? If you truly are, the original white/ochre is the best option. Same with deluxe 2-tone a close second. All else is third or further down the list. Last edited by jocko; 01-02-2016 at 12:26 AM. |

Re: Question about value and paint schemes
FWIW I say Ochre but I like it
Value on these trucks is so subjective its unreal. If you want blue by all means do blue One thing I mentioned to you before is definitely do some trim. Even if you just do conventional two tone with white cab and blue body I would put the upper molding on. I get why people omit the moldings but I see it as a corner cut or a money saver and I really like moldings they make the truck look more complete ITs your ride do as you wish |

Re: Question about value and paint schemes
You're planning to keep it, so paint it the color you want.
If it's done well, a color change isn't going to hurt the resale value of your truck. Just don't paint it purple. |

Re: Question about value and paint schemes
Your truck, paint it the color that makes you happy. As long as you stay with an original color and scheme to these trucks I don't believe you would hurt resell value and blue is more desirable than ochre to the majority of potential buyers.

Re: Question about value and paint schemes
At the risk of taking some mortar fire, more desirable may also mean more valuable. Not to say that applies to my Chevy, because the SPID reads ochre.

Re: Question about value and paint schemes
Ok if this makes you look from a new perspective lets try this
In the end is this going to be a super nice restore job that is almost too nice to drive or is it going to be a driver and how close to a numbers matching original is it going to be? IF youre not going after a numbers matching show truck and just want to drive it there is where the difference will be Its not like you are asking the difference between a original paint scheme and some phsycadellic fluorescent zig zag 6 tone flip flop color scheme And in the end its only worth what some one is willing to pay Lets look at this truck for example as far as I can tell it was done correctly but would I pay $23k for it over a different one no way first of all if you are going to build/restore a Cheyenne do it right with the mouldings it looks like a plain jane truck except for the badges. $600-$700 worth of trim would really set this thing off http://www.ebay.com/itm/Chevrolet-C-...m=161930633972 |

Re: Question about value and paint schemes
Agree. that truck would look amazing with moldings.
This Chevy will primarily be GM original and GM original replacements (i.e., lots of NOS). Some original equipment replacements where it seems to make sense, such as the seals, some lines (e.g., brake, PS), radiator, gas tank, exhaust. Wouldn't mind locating an original floor mat, but I don't see any out there, so probably after market. Not exactly "numbers matching"......For example, my SPID calls for a step bumper, camper mirrors and 5 leaf springs in the rear. This truck will have sport mirrors, a sport bumper and drop springs. This is by no means a daily driver. Hasn't been since 1997. Once done, I'll drive it more than I have, maybe once or twice a week, but with 40K on the block today, I'll never see 100K.......I won't be chasing many car shows, but the goal is show quality work.

Re: Question about value and paint schemes
Sounds to me like you should pick an original scheme and colors and roll with it whatever color you choose.
Another example a guy down the street from me has a sweet 72 it is a longbed but that doesn't bother me near as much as it is red and white but no white cab. I forgot to look at the spid when I looked it over to see what the original paint was. He is asking a healthy sum for it but I can t get over the paint scheme being wrong. He even spent a bunch of money to have the underside of the hood repainted recently the whole time I am thinking about the cab My dad put 3 deuces on his 72 because that's his hotrod and that was cool when he was a kid not really a truck thing but its what he wanted |
