How can I find out what the original Engine was on my 68 GMC 1/2 ton? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I know there is a way to find out, but I am having no luck. It is pretty easy on my 70 442 Convertable, But I am stuck.. Does anyone know how to find out using my VIN, Someone told me that it is a 327, But Then someone told me it was a 350.. Any help?

Look @ the SPID on the inside of the glove box door

If you don`t have the SPID label,you can only determine if it was a 6cly or V8 by the second letter in the VIN...S for 6cyl and E for V8.I`ve never done the GM restoration packet thing.Is the specific info in those?

Your SPID (option sheet) will show any optional engine... if nothing is listed, then it is one of the 3 base model engines.
Being a GMC, your vin will start with either;
CS
CM
CE
CS would be an inline ... 250, standard, 292 optional.
CM would be GMC only V-6 engines... 305 standard, and possibly a 351 optional (i'm not sure when they dropped the 351 on 1/2 ton trucks)
CE would be the V-8, 307 is standard, 327, and 396 bug block were optional.

If your spid is missing, then there is no way of knowing your truck's history unless the build sheet is stuffed into the seat cuishons, or you start tracking down previouse owners.

I know I have many typos, and my spelling sucks, but there was an actual reason for that typo... band-aid on my middle finger..which is my main typing finger.
