actually it stands for Central Office Production Order.
This branch handles the oddities that people or companies special order that cannot be purchased through regular chains of consumer buying lines. Things like Police cars, Taxi cabs that need a specific color (like taxi yellow) and of course the famous Nicky, Baldwin Motion, Yenko cars that were ordered with 427 engines (Chevelles, Novas, Camaros) and the Yenko Duece (LT1 350 powered) Novas. Your truck may have has a specific color ordered from the factory that had to be approved before making a line change in the paint dept. Then the people will make out the COPO approved change and go with it. It may have had an odd engine option, or a heavy chassis option, but most of the COPO stuff was color orientated especially on our trucks.

67shortie is correct. It normally means that the truck was part of some kind of fleet purchase for a large corporation.

It's probably a real pain in the neck for you but, I would love to see a picture of the vin Plate and the inside of the glove box to see how Gm wrote that up on that truck
It sounds like a special truck there. Copo (Central Office Production Order)

Most government trucks or fleet trucks for oil companies or delivery companies were COPO, it had something to do with tax write offs as well I believe

I had a 68 short step that was a COPO. It was a Navy truck. Nothing really special on it. Just the battleship grey paint. Sure was a clean truck though. It had a six and a glide. It did have shoulder harness seat belts. They were blue. I gave them to a buddy at work. Other than that it was a totally stripped down version.

C.O.P.O.
Cool ! At the recent Barrett Jackson Auction in Scottsdale a Camaro with C.O.P. O. designation went for over $100K. Not sure if these rarities apply to our trucks or not. Maybe fully restored it would command a higher price.
Nice find.

COPO on camaros is rare in that 69 were produced/ a double copo was an all aluminum 427 not a steel one, Nickey/yenkos/baldwins are not copos. These dealers would order camaros and place their own 427's in them. A racer named fred gibbs got a dealer to order one but they had to be ordered in a block of 50. COPO in our trucks is could be paint or a number of things. In 72 my dad ordered a c-10 black stepside that was a 402/turbo400/411 rear and a heavy half had leafspring that was a copo as well

Right-- My hands cannot keep up with my brain. What I was trying to do was make the point that when you say copo in relation to a camaro What people are talking about are the 69 that were purchased with the first going to Racer Dick Harell through Fred Gibbs Chevrolet. When they didn't sell easily the others were dispursed throughout the country. I heard a story of one sitting at a dealer for over 2 yrs before it was sold since they sold for i think $7,700+ a lot of change in 69. Yes they were factory installed in the later yenkos etc. But I thought I had seen a 67 Nickey 427. But the first ones were dealer swaps so no copos just dealer swaps

Not to start an argument, the Gibbs cars were built by Chevy as a factory racecar, ZL-1, all aluminum 427. The price tag of the car was VERY expensive for it's day. The sales mostly went to racers, and a few found thier way into Corvettes. 500 hp was not a uncommon # for these engines. The reason was simple for this swap, less weight=quicker et's and faster around the track.
Not my knowledge, there was no such thing as a 'double copo' The iorn 427's were factory installed and ordered by dealers as a special 'dealer built' car. Yes, some 427's were installed at the dealers, but most came from Chevrolet that way. Heck they even had headers shipped with them in the trunk for the serious racers and street cars. The buyers could get just about anything they wanted back then......from the dealers and Chevrolet.

COPO Chevelles
Don't forget the COPO Chevelles. Berger Chevy here in Grand Rapids sold a few of them, I believe 9 of them in 1969 with the cast iron block 427. My dad's got nine Chevelles, four El Camino's, five '72 Chevy Pickups, one of which is a very nice original 402 BB swb truck, two 4x4's (one of which is soon to become my project), and last but not least a '70 K5 Blazer. Unfortunately, while most of his cars and trucks are big blocks and or Super Sports in the case of the cars, no COPO's.
