If you wanted to get good street performance rearend. What would be the best posi rearend to put under a 72 shortie. Thanks everyone

For mild street performance, can't really beat an OEM 12 bolt rear end if you can find one that the posi unit is not hammered. Otherwise, an Eaton posi unit is a good choice for the money.

If you are looking for a completely different rearend, and you will be running a little more power, can go wrong with a 9" Furd.

I'm sure others will chime in with other rearends that have the correct width that can be used with a simple trailing arm pad/spring perch change. There are some with factory rear disc brakes that can be swapped in easily too.

I know I wish I would have taken the effort to put a 9 inch in mine. I'm using a factory 12 bolt that I put in an eaton posi unit.

If I would have used a 9", I could have narrowed a bit (easily) and had a stronger rearend and wouldn't have cost much more than what I have in my rearend.

Another choice that I know some off roaders use is a Ford 8.8. It's supposed to be fairly strong and may have disk brakes. Problem is the explorers have a 5x4.5 bolt pattern (which is why jeep guys like them too since most jeeps use 5x4.5)....but it has a good reputation.

Another possibility is a Dana 44. It was used in a lot of vehicles with various bolt patterns. I know it was used in some foreign SUVs that have 6 lug bolt patterns (not sure on size of lug pattern though). And I'm sure the widths would vary depending on donor vehicle.
