Re: rear axle question

Actually, Captainfab, this makes 3 times. Lots of questions about rear ends on the forum lately, giving you many chances to "reiterate" certain facts.

Re: rear axle question

Well I would say it depends on which one has the gear ratio you need and what it will cost to make the necessary changes. Changing your original rear end to 5 lug will require machine work. The '72 will require some cutting and welding. The '81 you got with the frame will require some cutting and welding also, but it will have the bigger brakes. Is the '81 rear end a 12 bolt or a 10 bolt? Do you know anyone that can help you with either the machining or the cutting and welding? Or are you capable yourself? Keep in mind that the welding needs to be done by a competent weldor since this requires good welds on a critical component.

Re: rear axle question

bump for captainfab. I am putting the front end in today. also ordered my wheels today. so I am down to deciding between the stock rear end or the 80 model I have sitting here. Which do you think would be a better choice?

Re: rear axle question

I would go with the '80 model rear end. It has the bigger brakes and is already 5 lug. The only unknown at this point is the gear ratios of the two rear ends. The '80 rear end is probably going to be higher geared. What bolt pattern of wheels did you order? 5x5 or 5x4.75?
