What carburetor should I buy?
I need a new carb for my 350 on my 72 Jimmy. It already has an Edelbrock intake and a stock Quadrajet that I rebuilt and had apart a few times. Pretty stock truck just need a good carb with an electric choke. Can't get this one to run right! I have used the Edelbrock 600 and also Holley before and had good luck with both. Anybody have any better recomendations? Thanks

Re: What carburetor should I buy?
Personally, I'd look for another Q-jet IMO, a good Q-Jet is impossible to beat

Edelbrock 600 (model 1406 w/electric choke) all the way. Bolt on out-of-the-box and go.

Re: What carburetor should I buy?
I agree with both replies. A properly done Q-jet is tough to beat but a good one can also be expensive. The Edelbrock 1406 600 cfm carb works flawlessly on most 350's that are in good condition. Take it out of the box, hook it up and enjoy your truck! I have had great experiences with both.
Good Luck! |

It does appear (actually smell) a bit fat. One of these years I'm going to get the kit to tune it and see if I can lean it out a bit.

Re: What carburetor should I buy?
I went from a Q-jet to an Edelbrock performer and now I have a Holley 600 cfm. I really like the Holley so far but to be fair the Edelbrock and Q-jet were used and the Holley new. My engine is a 1970 300hp 350 with a performer RPM and the holley was a bolt on and go. It was around $290 new from Advance Auto parts.

Re: What carburetor should I buy?
Carb choice has a lot to do with what you personally like and can get to work for you.
I've run Holleys for years and have good luck with them while my buddy wouldn't run one if he had a free boxcar load of them. I've found over the years that patience, finess and total attention to details are three things that are required for being successful when redoing a carb. One of the big issues with Quadrojets has always been the throttle shafts getting loose and I firmly believe that a guy could make a good living if he was setup to correctly rebush the throttle bodys, reinstall the shafts and plates correctly and return them promptly. |

Re: What carburetor should I buy?
I have rebuilt mine but I still have a problem with it cutting out to almost no power occasionally, then I have to let off the gas then slowly push the throttle down, or it will quit running. Idles good and runs pretty good until this happens.

Re: What carburetor should I buy?
I replaced my Holly 600 to the Edelbrock 1406, not much of a difference, but at least the Edelbrock doesn't leak gas onto the intake.

Re: What carburetor should I buy?
That was my reason for getting an Edelbrock also. Even after 2 rebuilds, the Holley kept finding places to leak from. Scared the heck out of me, and I am really happy with the Edelbrock since it has a fuel bowl with the gasget at the top of the carb

Re: What carburetor should I buy?
I used an edelbrock 1406, never had an issue with it. Am now runing a webber equivalent of the 1406 edelbrock. No one answered the a/c question... edelbrock sells the ac idle compensator. Its p.n. is 8059.

Re: What carburetor should I buy?
I do have A/C although it does not have a belt on it right now. I will eventually get it hooked up. How does that part hook up to the A/C? How is the fishing on Taneycomo? I fly fish quite a bit down there, I know they have been running lots of water all spring!

Re: What carburetor should I buy?
i am about to buy a 1406 edelbrock carb, i think, yall have answered the a.c. question for me and thanks all for that, but..... yall say it bolts right on. Is this true for me. What i have is a complete stock motor setup from intake up to the wing nut that holds the air cleaner. will it bolt on or is the adapter plate needed. also will the kickdown and throttle linkage be correct? thanks for any help. it is a 72 chevy 350/350

Re: What carburetor should I buy?
How about the new Summit carbs? They are like the old discontinued Holley 4010 and the old Autolite 4100 and are built by Holley. They have annular boosters and anything with the word "annular" in it can't be all that bad, right? I have experience with the old Autolite carbs are they are awesome. Give you the Edelbrock two piece no leak design but with the Holley tuning capability.
