YOUR QUESTION
That question about under dash A/C is unbelievable! I just met a man today that came in to the shop and we got to talking about my GMC. I told him it is impossible to find an A/C 4X4 cab in good shape. His friend has an under dash unit he is trying to get rid of. I told him I was interested if it worked, because these hot and humid summers down here in Graceland are miserable. Do they work good? I can get all the parts used: (dash, control unit, ducts, heater core, evaporator box, evaporator, hose assembly, reciever/ dryer, A/C tubes, condenser, vacume tank, actuator, shut off valve). That will however be expensive to buy, and replace bad parts. I have a shop, so the only cost to vacuum the system, and inject the drug, is the cost of the freon (FR-12, an R-12 substitute).

Anybody tried Hot Rod Air? They won the 2000 Best new product fo the year award from SRMA for thier design on the elite standard evaporator. They also have really great looking bulkhead plates.

Anyone ever used air conditioning out of GM cars or trucks to a non a/c cab? We have a late 80s Grand Am and an 88 chevy pickup just taking up space, the Grand Am has ice cold air too.
Just a thought.

Well we are a Authorized Old Air distributor and we chose Old Air over Vintage Air for the fact that the Vintage Air systems box is a sealed box so say your evaporator core fails, you have to replace entire box, heater core again the same thing replace the entire box. Old Air you can open box and replace individual parts. The Vintage Air design we found creates back-pressure in the system at slower fan speeds due to the fact the blower is to the rear and side of the box so it must make a 90 degree turn to pass thru the box for heating and cooling which creates back pressure and lower air flow especially at slower speeds. The Old Air systems uses the blower motor to draw the air across the evaporator core or heater core in a straight line then straight out through ducting increasing air flow out put at all levels. ( Point blank a Old Air system correctly installed and charged on a 95-100 degree day in Indiana will freeze you out of your truck on high) You can check our prices on these on the following page
http://www.gmcpauls.com/SALE_SPECIALS.htm You will find we can save you nearly $200 by buying through us rather than direct from Old Air. and for greater info than listed their visit http://www.oldairproducts.com GMCPaul |

I have an under dash A/C unit. It's an old Sears brand unit! It will freeze you out, even in 100 degrees with my leaky ass cab. I plan on exchanging it one day for an Old Air unit because my wife is scared of it crushing legs in an accident. That's the only drawback. Sure works great though!

Re: under dash air conditioners ???
gmcpaul: that's why we cant find any trucks out there to build....you got them all.....man that's one fine collection.... does sound like the a/c system you have may be a good unit, i like the fact that you could split the case in the event something went wrong down the road....

Re: under dash air conditioners ???
I restored the dealer installed underdash a/c on my K25...works real good in 100 degree weather, but the blower is a little noisy on high. Check out my build thread for pics if you like.
