Disc Brake Conversion

Hello,

I've looked through the FAQ and I think this can be done because others have mentioned different years in their projects, but before I invest the time and money I'd like to pick ur brains and get ur opinions;

I'd like to know if I can pull the whole suspension off (1970 GMC 3/4 ton 8 bolt) by removing the frame bolts from the crossmember and control arms, remove shocks, brake line, stablizer bar brackets and disconnecting pitman arm. I have a 1976 3/4 ton donor with disc brakes (also 8 bolt) and I'm hoping I can just bolt it's setup back and change to a dropped spindle (with new coils?).

Or should I just save up and buy dropped disc conversion kit for the original.

I'm a novice comfortable with swapping identical parts but because of my lack of knowledge I get concerned about interchanging parts from different vehicles.

Re: Disc Brake Conversion

Yes - you should be able to do this without too much trouble. If you have read the FAQ then you know about the 2 holes per side you need to change.

I am not too sure about the drop spindles for a 3/4T(8 lug). There are a couple of ways to lower a 3/4T. One is drop springs. Another way is modified lower control arms. The ball joint is raised to provide the drop.

If somebody knows of a source for drop spindles for a 3/4T please post it here. At one time I thought BellTech had them but now I'm not too sure.

One item you did not mention is the proportioning valve. Make sure you include that in your swapping of parts.

Have fun - Bob
