is my granny 4spd sychronized?
I have a 72 c20 2wd 4spd it has the factory 350 still in it running great but what Im trying to figure out is if the transmission is sychronized or not I do not know which 4psd or the gearing I have aint had it that long I say it is definatly not after driving it but I have people telling me that it is mine is just messed up, I just want to know if any of the transmissions in these trucks were not synchronized.

Re: is my granny 4spd sychronized?
The one in my '71 is sychronized in all forward gears, except 1st gear (low gear).
I rarely ever use 1st because it is so low. Danny

Your clutch may not be disengaging completely. Does the transmission grind when you try to shift from neutral into 1st or reverse from a dead stop?

Re: is my granny 4spd sychronized?
no, like I said I havent used 1st and reverse worked fine, it didnt grind which I thought was odd because my dads 82 for wrecker has the granny 4spd and it is a paint to get into reverse and my old f150 was also a pain I guess thts a ford thing, also when i BOUGHT THE TRUCK IN FEB THE GUY SAID THE CLUTCH WAS A FEW MONTHS OLD tht could have been a lie but I have not seen it it out yet and the clutch feels fine

Re: is my granny 4spd sychronized?
I have never driven an older granny 4-speed with synchros on low gear. Not saying they don't exist, but I've never seen one.

Re: is my granny 4spd sychronized?
If you are not grinding gears when shifting that would tell me the synchros are doing their job. Hard to shift with no grinding might indicate the clutch is not releasing properly.

Re: is my granny 4spd sychronized?
Yup, 1st and rev are unsynced, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th have syncros. Mine shifts kind of hard when I downshift into 2nd but doesn't grind. To get into 1st or rev you have to be at a dead stop or it will grind, and sometimes if it won't pop in it helps to slowly let out the clutch while you keep pressure on the shifter. I used to drive a 73 f350 (I think the tranny was very similar if not the same) and it shifted identical to mine so I assume that is how they are supposed to work. I thought mine was a pain till I drove my wife's 41 gmc, now that one is a trick to drive without grinding

Re: is my granny 4spd sychronized?
i'd throw some marvel mystery oil in the tranny run it for a few days of driving then drain it and fill with synthetic gear lube and see how it works after the fluid change

Re: is my granny 4spd sychronized?
In all of the manual shift vehicles I have ever had, (several) I always put the tranny in the highest forward gear (4th in a 4 speed, 5th in a 5 speed) before shifting into reverse. This always kept grinding to a minimum. I have had manual trannys in the following and this always worked:
71 Chevy El Camino SS 4 speed 82 Ford Escort 4 speed 70 Chevy Nova 4 speed 86 Ford Tempo 5 speed 80 GMC 1 ton 4 speed 93 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4 5 speed 72 Chevy 1/2 ton 3 OTT 71 GMC 1/2 ton 3 OTT Last edited by WIDESIDE72; 05-31-2010 at 10:20 AM. |
