Where to get steel?
I'm not sure if this belongs in here, but here goes.
I'm an idiot when it comes to body work, fabrication, welding, and pretty much any metal work. I have no clue. I'm going to be putting in my 2000 Chevy buckets in my truck and thought I would drill the 8 holes for the seats and put a two pieces of steel under the floor to attach them to. Something maybe 1/8 thick, 2-3 inches wide and 5 ft. long. My question is where do you guys get your steel at. There is a Timken steel plant here in White House, but everytime I've been by there to talk to the guys about different things they are a little standoffish(comes with the uniform). I'd appreciate the feedback, Bryan

I go to the steel recycle guys and walk up to the guys in the
garage part and ask to see their cut off or scrap bin. Find some pieces and shoot em $5. I got my tranny cross support there for my 4 speed. |

Look in the yellow pages under "steel distributors" or sales. Should be able to locate one that sells to the general public.
If you don't mind cleaning up a little bit of rust, some places offer remnant steel at a fraction of the cost.

I'm lucky, my wife works for at a plant that makes ship furniture and stuff from metal, so I get it from there. I pay what they would get for scrap turnin. We have some recycling centers here and some metal dealers so that helps. AS mentioned, Home Depot and Lowes sells is in certain sizes.

My local scrap/recycling yard will not sell his stuff to me. Still kinda pi$$ed about it. Don't quite remember/get his reason... I have a couple of local steel distributers. They sell everything in 20' lengths. Charge a cut fee. They allways have a remnant pile where the stuff is reduced. Still ain't "cheap" though.
