When I install my fuel cell in between the frame rails will I need to install a external pump or will the fuel pump in the block do the job?

I believe you will need a external fuel pump. I am not 100% sure but can't see why you wouldn't. Someone else will chime in with a better answere.

the one on the engine will be fine. The pump will never know the difference.

I would think that if you're running a carbureted engine, the mechanical pump on the engine would be enough - normally electric pumps and pressure regulators are used more with EFI. I don't have much experience with fuel cells, though.
Maybe someone else can answer this one - Can you use a fuel cell without a return line? I always wondered how these work...

It is carbuereted. Forgot to mention that. Was thinking about that long of a run from the back of the truck to the front. Going to have to put in a fuel filter someplace. Maybe use the stock one about halfway.

I know what you mean about the length of the run, but I'm thinking the suburbans just used the engine driven pump, and its tank is way back there. (right guys?)
I like having my filter close to the pump. On my camaro I've got a large clear one at the forward end of the hard line, then fuel hose to the pump. I've got a smaller clear one (glass, Mr Gasket I think) up by the carb. Overkill probably, but I have no idea what's in the tank!

I was thinking about using the stock filter somewhere down the frame rail in between the pump and the tank. Now all I gotta do is think of a way to make it stay in there

by doing that, you can induce vapor lock, or if you already have it, it'llmake it worse. I am not familiar with a stock filter on the frame.

lookat suburbans and blazers and make your system like that /stock mechanical pump filter between the carb and the pump // good enough for the factory and reliable for 30-40 years why wouldn't it be good enough now??
