Copper Washer between hose and wheel cylinder??

Replaced brakes today and the old wheel cylinder had a copper washer between the brake hose fitting and the wheel cylinder.

Brake hoses I ordered from LMC did not come with copper washers and I could not find any on the LMC website. Do I reuse the old copper washer where the hose screws into the wheel cyilinder???

Thanks

So you used them without washers and no leaks?

When we took the wheel cylinders off there were no washers and no leaks. We didn't put them on when we put new cylinders in.

Quick60 are you sure they wheel cylinders and not calipers? Calipers use copper washer for the banjo bolt and wheel cylinders use a double flair with a line nut that seals them

My question too. Sounds like somebody stuck a washer where it doesn't belong if it was on the old hose. wheel cyl=no washers/ calipers=washers

Re: Copper Washer between hose and wheel cylinder??

I would not put it together without the copper washer. The copper is a good seal and it works well. Having grown up with my family being involved with motorcycles of the past, I learned that a copper gasket is very versatile. If you cannot find a new copper washer, then you can heat the old one up and let it swell back to a normal thickness and let is cool slowly and use it again. I used to do this with head gaskets all of the time when tearing down a motorcycle engine.

Re: Copper Washer between hose and wheel cylinder??

Positive they are wheel cylinders.

Did the passenger side today and it too has a OE copper washer. In addition the NAPA website shows copper washers in the photo for their wheel cylinders. LMC did not send washers with the hose or wheel cylinder. I will talk to LMC tomorrow and go from there.
If they dont have an answer will probably use the old washers because it does not look like these will seal without the washer. I will send a pic.

Re: Copper Washer between hose and wheel cylinder??

even cheap discount store parts come with extra washers, I got plenty of spare in my tool box from that. LMC or their supplier is cutting coners in the worst way.

In my expirience if the male threaded fitting is long enough to seat on the flare, then no washer is required. It's a washer is necessary, then it's either a 3/8 or 7/16. Most auto stores will have them.

All of the hoses that I have put on, come with the seals for seating the hose to the caliper. Going back to the question of whether you have calipers or wheel cylinders. If there is a lack of copper washers, then go to the local auto supply and pick up some. Just so I am not to far out on a limb, why did you get your hoses through LMC and not go to the local auto supply?

Re: Copper Washer between hose and wheel cylinder??

I bought the replacement front drum brake hoses from my local Hedahls store. They didn't come with washers and of course I ended up losing one of the washers that was on the truck.

Living 20 miles from town I didn't want to drive back in so I found an old head gasket with a similar sized hole and cut it out. It worked fine. I've done this before to seal oil pan drain plugs. It works well and is as cheap as your storage is which is free in my case lol.

Re: Copper Washer between hose and wheel cylinder??

Looking inside the wheel cylinder there is not a good surface for the flare to seat on to. I am going with the washer to be suer. If it leaks I will take it out.

I did not realize that that local supplier would have as many parts for a 67 as they do. Pretty amazing when you go in and ask for a widget for a truck thats 45 years old and they say o yea I have two on the shelf.

I did go to NAPA today and buy two copper washers.

Good idea though I have some copper head gaskets from my jr dragster that would work perfect. Much thicker than a V8 copper gasket.

Re: Copper Washer between hose and wheel cylinder??

If you use old copper washers, heating (400º F, you can do this in your oven) them anneals them, returning them to a "dead soft" condition. Copper work hardens and becomes brittle when bent or deformed. Or mashed in the brake system. A hardened copper washer will not deform properly and may not seal.

I would not use a head gasket except in an emergency, and I would be checking the fastener torque a few times after installation if I did.

Brakes are checked to 2000 psi on the assembly line, to assure they are good enough. I'd be careful with any substitution of parts, for safety reasons.
