Update Steering

Hello everyone,

I have a 70 c10 and I would like to update the steering to a tilt column with power steering. I currently do not have power steering. It seems like people update there column with a tilt column from a van. What years of van can I get this from? Or is someone has a alternate route please chime in.

Re: Update Steering

Van tilts have to be modified to fit. 70's-early 80's, before keys were added to the column do a search on the site and you will have plenty of reading material. As far as power steering, you could become a member for 25.00 a year and post a want to buy ad, asking for the ps box, pump, and hoses needed to do the conversion.

best of luck!

Re: Update Steering

My tilt came out of an 82 Van. Vans with the round headlights have the right style columns but don't pass by the square headlight Vans without looking because this 82 Van had the square ones.

I think these had the column mounted ignition switch, but you could probably do it.

It's interesting that you have a 70 because that was the first year that the tilt column was available. You could scrounge the wrecking yards for a 70-72 tilt column and pick up the power steering stuff at the same time or you could also buy an aftermarket one from a supplier like LMC Truck but they are very pricey.

Re: Update Steering

well i have put a 80 chevy dash and steering column in my 69 but havent figured out how to hold the steering column up in the right place on the fire wall. you have to modifie your brake assembly where your steering column goes because they are bigger and longer then where it comes through your gauge cluster you have to make that bigger to
