Are GMC's as popular as Chevy

I've been looking for a 72 SWB Chevy for a while now, something that wouldn't take much to run and wasn't a complete rust bucket. I found a 72 that I like and its a GMC which I have no problem with at all. I was just curious if the GMC's are as popular as the Chevrolets and if the GMCs carry about the same value.

GMC's are better than Chevy's... but I am kinda biased.

Up here it's 6 of one and half a dozen of the other. I was always told that GMC were upscale from the Chevy. I grew up with GMC's and am biased. I love the the GMC grills. Chevy is fine and I have a 69 myself but the GMC's are dear to my heart.

Sounds like your goal is to flip it, but if not, whatever is popular doesn't matter, it only matters that is creates a fire inside of you...

For flipping and making money, Chevys are hard to beat, but I have seen nice optioned GMCs bring a bit more because there are not so many.

Not looking to flip, I like both Chevys and GMCs and have had both in the past. I was just curious since I have been searching the last few weeks.

Re: Are GMC's as popular as Chevy

When I was a kid they used to sell them at the local Buick dealer. Which makes me think the might have been more expensive. So you don't see as many. I could be wrong. (I usually am)

I had a 70 GMC and I thought it was the best looking of these trucks that I have owned. It was just a little too rusty for me or I'd still have it.

I haven't noticed a big price gap between the two. At least not around here.

If I was to buy another truck now. I'd go for a GMC first, but that's just me, and I have a Chevy already. They're all good in my book.

Condition and price would be my biggest concerns. Not the grille.

Paul, is that YOUR truck? If it's the truck I'm thinking of, I almost bought that one instead of restoring my own...

The color on your truck is way nicer, I love that blue! Sometimes I'm tempted to find a super clean truck and just go into a easier maintenance mode.

Re: Are GMC's as popular as Chevy

seems to me that gmc were typically lower production so not encountered as often in the same config as its counterpart chevy..

generally speaking, lower production and lower availability with all other things being equal would tend to increase the value and possibly popularity to collectors..

purists will however insist on the bowtie so the gmc rarity, collectors value, and popularity is worth less to them..

I have owned 3 of each; 68 gmc, 74 chevy, 93 chevy, 02 gmc, 65 chevy, 71 gmc [delivering tomorrow ]

personally, I like the design enhancements of the gmc and made my recent purchase based on a gmc specific national search..

it's really up to the individual as far as taste beauty is in the eye of the beerholder

unless operating a dealer or business, I suggest spending your doll hairs on what you are going to be happy with, not what's popular to others..

good luck on your decision!

I don't want to derail this thread, but that is one of the absolute best looking factory cars ever built. If you have one of these I would love to see pics. Contact me via PM if you have pics I can see.

Smile Re: Are GMC's as popular as Chevy

GMC or Chevy....very tough question relative to 'popular'.
There are more Chevy's...so they will win a popularity contest by sheer numbers.
GMC's tho' were regarded as being more unique and upscale I think....and lower production numbers.... so that might add to their 'collectability' value.
I think its way too close to call....and comes down to a truck by truck basis for most.
I don't know anyone who would walk away from a chevy for a GMC or vice versa.... if it was a really nice, well optioned truck.....I wouldn't, having had both.

All good

It was mine until I woke up. And I had a supermodel sitting next to me too.

It's just a picture I snagged off the net to show how nice these trucks look.

And of course the supermodel wasn't here. She has a restraining order.

Re: Are GMC's as popular as Chevy

I see no difference in value between the brothers. Either you want a Chevy, a GMC, or don't care and just go by the condition. But people don't buy GMCs because they are cheaper. That's new car shopping mentality anyway.

I have all the near mint original emblems off that truck. The owner went all new repro on that restoration. It was almost as nice before the restoration.

Re: Are GMC's as popular as Chevy

My answer to the original question = NO.

I like em both, and have both. But no, not as popular, till, you ask a GMC guy. It's like Chevy guys can and do love both, but GMC guys, A lot of them, only love GMC's.
My newest addition to the herd is a 71 GMC. Big block, factory air, tach.tilt.

I chose to build a GMC for the simple reason that I'm less likely to run into another one wherever I go. WARNING: Don't build one unless you like a lot of attention. I'm not kidding.

While the GMC data was lost to a fire, it was believed Chevrolet outsold GMC 4:1, but looking at the trucks that are left, it appears GMCs have had a much lower survival rate than Chevrolet's (including being transformed in Chevrolet's).

Re: Are GMC's as popular as Chevy

My grandfather had a 56 GMC and I loved that old truck. Always liked the fact that he had something different, so when I went looking for a GMC (they are harder to find) I found this 72.

Mine is completely restomodded with a ZZ4 FIRST TPI fuel injected, 700r4 overdriven, GM cruised controlled, Vintage Air cooled, Willwooded braked, Bluetooth Retrosound tuned, dropped........Time Machine and my 4 year old grandson loves it. Lol

Yep, real steel and chrome on those front ends, no plastic....I had a 1970 GMC and that was a good looking truck.
If it wasn't for the look of the '71/72' eggcrate style front grills of the Chevy (which I've always loved)....I would be next after the GMC's for looks....just personal preference here.

All good
