Re: Ouch cracked frame???

1. Stop driving it.
2. Get it squared up and weld it.
3. Add gussets over the weld.
4. Box it.
5. Go over the rest of your frame with a fine toothed comb.

Good plan,If your help is good at welding you can forget it after hes done.I made a short bed out of a long bed (mud truck) and I'm super hard on it.No cracks,no problems.Did the work myself.

The new weak point will be right next to the current crack. That's why you want to gusset and plate.

Re: Ouch cracked frame???

Well I might be in luck guys it just so happens Im taking my kids to stay with grandma this weekend in Houston I made a call to my buddy and he said I could use his mig. so in between then and now im gonna go take some frame portions off my donor truck and cut the top and bottum off and weld them on the inside and out plus bolt them as well im gonna use about an 10 inch portion and hopefully it will be all good.Since im pretty much dead in the water as of now i took some time to brush off the frame and spray a few cans of krylon on it.I only had 1 steel brush wheel gota get some more tom and finish up.Yeah this is a budget build as you can tell.

Re: Ouch cracked frame???

Ok I gota guy coming to fix it this Thursday I emailed him the picts and he said no prob to weld it.Im gonna cut a pc of frame off my donor truck for more support. The good thing is I caught it before I got it running and this is the only spot in the frame thats bad. After talking to the previos owner he said he heard a strange noice one time when he loaded 2 pallets of stone in the back.DUHHHH its only a half ton and it had a 6 banger in it before. The guys not to bright wait come to think of it hes my wifes ex-husband yeah that explains it.

Re: Ouch cracked frame???

Its a 93 fleet short bed.I think it was like this before I just didnt catch it.It had a 6 cyl in it I have a 350 in it now I lowered the front with spindles and springs and took the bed off to do the rear when I caught it.Mind you those picts were with a bit of starin on the frame I didnt have the leaf spings in yet.I am keeping the jack stand under the frame until its all welded up.

Have it boxed while he's repairing it.

Re: Ouch cracked frame???

I am sure that your going to have to sand the area of the crack to metal before you weld it.

Re: Ouch cracked frame???

are you going to box the frame? I hope so, and remember. if you do and something is suppose to bolt on in that area. make sure you weld the bolts on before you box it up. or you will have a hell of a time trying to bolt it on without access. unless there is another way...?

Re: Ouch cracked frame???

Are u using a 110 flux core welder on this? If so that's a huge no no.
You need a 220 welder for penetration

Re: Ouch cracked frame???

You gota be kidding me right?Yes its a 110 mig but I was running it on the hotest setting it seemed to be doing fine plus I also intend to drill a few holes thru and bolt some extra support bolts as well

Sorry not kidding at all that welder even at its highest setting will not penetrate well enough through the thickness of your frame. Like one of the others said if you can't get a 220 welder than take the truck to a weld shop.

Just tryin to look out for the safty of you and your family.

Re: Ouch cracked frame???

Try not to be so harsh on him he did try and weld the sh** out of it, except the weld ended up looking like buzzard poop cuz its too cold. I have the same little mig and cO2 bottle. If you really want to fix that yourself then grind off all the plate you attached to the frame and bevel out the crack and make sure you drill a hole on both side of the crack so it doesnt reapear. Preheat the crack with an oxy/acty torch and while its hot fill in the crack and the end holes. Make sure that the weld bead isnt bunching up like bird poop, if it is heat the area with the torch some more. The weld bead should want to flatten out and flow into both pieces of metal. You might as well do this to both sides of the crack being that you probly wont penetrate properly from one side. The welds should be sucked into the metal and shouldnt have any random nipples popping out. Then you can knock them down a little bit with a grinder so you can plate it. Give yourself some extra insurance and weld a plate to the backside of the crack "inside the frame channel" Forget the bolts but drill the plate like swiss cheese and plug weld it. Don't forget to preheat the frame before you fill in the plug weld. Just aim for the upper half of the holes and melt the base metal then fill in the rest of the hole fusing the plate to the frame. Fill all the plug welds on the inside, then do a perimeter lap weld around the plate, "Pre-heat!" Do this to the outside of the frame and you might as well do it to the top and bottom while your at it.
Have fun penetrating.
