what driveline do i need?
Hey guys. I have a 72 short box that came with a two piece driveline. Well do to the amount lowered I have a bad angle at the carrier bearing. It mounts from the top And it hangs to low so there is no way to shim it up. I have broke 4 carrier bearings in a short time.
I want to run a one piece drive shaft. The length of the drive one piece needs to be 60 1/8 center to center. My question is what car do i need to be looking for at the junkyard that will have a driveline longer then 60 1/8? Its a lot cheaper to have a driveline shortened then it is to have one made new. Hope you guys can follow what I’m trying to do. |

Re: what driveline do i need?
Did you adjust your pinion angle when it was lowered?
If not that's why you keep breaking the carrier. A one piece shaft won't help unless you adjust the pinion angle too! |

Re: what driveline do i need?
Wow how low are you?
I'm pretty sure if you're sitting on the bumpstops (not notched) the shaft is straight. If you're much lower than that you will need a custom crossmember for a one piece and maybe a trans tunnel for the bottom of the cab to have decent driveline angles. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: what driveline do i need?
I'm just going to assume that when the carrier bearings were replaced, the bolt on yoke was marked and put back on in time and the stub checked to make sure runout was less than .002". and then made sure that the bolt didn't bottom out before the yoke got tight and then reballanced....... right?
If not I'm going to assume you have a vibration issue and your drop isn't the cause of your headaches. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: what driveline do i need?
Searching in for a used driveline that might work, isn't swelled in the middle from factory, isn't bent (can be very hard to tell), isn't dented, has the right weld yokes for your ujointsand in good useable condition. = days + $60+ cut and weld and ballance..... $160 + new ujoints $40. So about $200 in a rusty used shaft and a few days out of your week. Plus gas....
New shaft built to your specs reusing your old trans yoke about $200, Posted via Mobile Device

Re: what driveline do i need?
Hey. Thanks for advice. It was marked and timed correctly. The pinion angle is wrong if trying to line up with the carrier bearing. From day one I've wanted to put a one piece in. The pinion angle is spot on with the tranny. The carrier bearing crossmember is not a problem. I'm building a new one to alow for my three inch drop trailing arms that I'm also building.

Re: what driveline do i need?
Even marked and timed correctly the ballance changes each time. I don't know why even when the carrier bearing slides right off, like when the new guy put the wrong bearing on one part of a 5 piecer today, we replaced the bearing and sure enough the ballance was effected.

Re: what driveline do i need?
ya thats crazy.
to have a driveline built here it will cost 300 plus. to have one shortened and balenced its 50. so even with new joints it will be a lot less. but im still thinking about just having one built. |

Re: what driveline do i need?
If your trans yoke is good that will probably save you $50
