Shifter

I'm trying to fix a problem with my shifter, auto trans to be exact. I can shift through Reverse to Low, but cannot get it into Park. It will go into Park if I do so under the hood but cannot do it via the shifter. I was told it was the shift tube but cannot find any info on this. Can anyone offer their opinion and where I can go to get parts?

Welcome to the board. Have you tried adjusting it under the hood. How much slop is in it?

There is a little free play but I don't think there is enough to cause my problem. When you normally have to pull back on the shifter to put it in Park, I can't do that. I'm uncertain if there is a spring, etc. that is broke or what exactly makes up the assembly. But while we are on the subject, what exactly constitutes too much slop? Thanks!

Try loosening the connection putting both tranny and shifter in Park, tighten it back and see if that helps. As far as slop goes, I went from having a column that I had to guess what gear I was in, to one with no slop at all (but I swapped cabs to do it.)

Is your shifter lever stuck so that you can't move it toward and away from the steering wheel?

No, I cannot move it towards the steering wheel. I am going to try the adjustment mentioned by the others to see if that will work. Otherwise, I'll be back to the beginning in trying to find a solution.

Well, I tried adjusting the shift linkage as per the previous posts, but that didn't help. If I move the shifter from under the hood, I can put it in any gear, including park. But, from in the cab, I can't get it into Park. Thanks for the continued input!

I'd do what Krue said. ( up until the swapping cabs part ) There's a lot of adjustment available once you loosen the wierd bolt thing on the linkage. If you get it loose then you can see tell if somethings binding in your column preventing you from getting into "Park". If you can, get a new or good used bolt with the hole in it part BEFORE you try loosening the existing one. If it's been there for 35+ yrs they can break before they come loose. As for what constitutes "too much slop" , That'd be having more than one meal at my motherinlaws.

if you disconnect the linkage from the trans can you then move the shifter to park?
the thing about the lever not moving in & out sounds like problems in the outer bowl area. ie. the spring froze or the "gate" worn out. either way it may be time for removal & dis-assembly. then clean & lube, and reinstall

No, I still cannot get the shifter into Park with the linkage disconnected. I've been trying to find a diagram of how everything goes together in the steering column but haven't had much success. I have a Haynes manual which tells me how to take it apart and put it back together, but I would much rather have a diagram. Does anyone have a diagram? Thanks!
