1st year for smog?
What was the first year for smog for these trucks?
I know it saw it somewhere on the board. I tried searching for it and could not find the thread. Thanks. |

Many 68's were equipped with smog pumps. As far as I know no 67's were. I think only 1/2 tons were equipped not 3/4 ton's and above.

Thanks.
Do you know what years require smog pumps? Is this a state issue? |

It's most certainly a state thing...my '70 has never had a smog pump or anything of the sort on it.

i beleave pcv has been on engines since the mid 60's. the car co.'s didnt invent pcv for emissions. if i can remember correctly is was to prevent blow by and make the engines last longer since they wouldn't get gas into the oil and thin it out. if i am wrong someone please correct me. as for emissions i would guess it mattered what state it was in also. mine only had a charcoal canister.

I agree it seems that CA trucks/cars had smog stuff earlier than the rest of the country.
I think around 70-71 they made the transitiion to heat risers rather than the smog pump set up. I've never seen on factory equipped with both in our series. I think 68 was the first year they were widly equipped nation wide with smog pumps.

I can't tell you when it happened but I can say that 68 begins the year that you must have some sort of emmissions products. 67 and older may have an open element air cleaner where-as 68 and newer may not, at least for inspection purposes.

My 69 3/4 ton had no smog pump. Just a heat riser, which I removed when it broke.

68 was first w/ PVC valve. Here in Missouri, they require that if it is equipped w/ the smog devices, it must have it. However if it was made before 83 or 4 you can take those divices off, but if the devices are still there they have to be in working order. after 83 they have to working period. I'm a MO state safety inspector #900023810. It is a state thing. Go to your local State Hwy patrol and ask for an inspection, free here in mo!

I'm an engine novice. What kind of smog devices should I be looking for? Where do they connect? What do they look like?

My '69 built and sold in Atlanta had it, but it's not required in GA, so maybe it was slated to be shipped to CA?

I don't know how It works but here's my smog pump. It's a belt driven pump with a bunch of plumbing to my exhaust manifolds.

Instead of smog pumps some 68's and later were equipped with the heat risers. I don't know of any other hard and fast rules.
