Just bought a 67 GMC SB
Just bought a 67 GMC, and i wanted to change out the 6er to an 8ter how difficult is it going to be? Is it something a shade tree mechanic can do? Great Message Board!!!

Post some pics of your truck! I swapped a 350 in place of a 250 back when I was a kid, so it can't be too hard! Been a long time, but there are lots of people who can help you!

WELCOME!
You can put any gas engine that you want, in the engine bay. There is plenty of room (within reason, of course). But, for ease of installation, any GM engine ever installed into a Chevy, will fit, and more, besides. The only real limitation, is $$$$$$$. Good luck.

Cant right now im at work, but will monday. It seems like i can probably.. correction i CAN do it myself. Thanks again, for the great advice. One more question, should i keep the 6 lugs or change to the 5 lugs, is it more of a personal thing? Keep on Trukin |

On that question, I would say it depends on what you want. If you are going to run factory rims or rallies there is no point in changing. If you want aftermarket then you may want to consider seeing that there are many more choices for the 5 on 5 bolt pattern to choose from. Good luck!

6 or 5 lugs, that is the Question...
I have a '69. I did a disc brake conversion and kept the 6-lug pattern because I already had a good set of aluminum wheels. Also, I thought it might be thought-provoking to those who knew that '69's didn't come with disc brakes. However, disc brakes have been standard equipment for so long, nobody notices.
The only problem, which isn't really a problem, is that the conversion adds to the front track (width between hubs). The rear axle from '70, is wider, and the 71 and 72 rear axles both have 5 lugs, as do the fronts. I used Early Classic Enterprises components, and all I have to do to convert the front to 5-lugs, is put on a pair of replacement GM rotors. Well, that and carry two spares.
