I wish I could have this. It is way cool.
I found this little gem sitting in a fenced in property in the city I work at. Being into these trucks and also being a firefighter/paramedic, I would love to get ahold of one of these and restore it. I finally was able to catch the guy that owns the yard it's in. As you can see in the background there are a few other old ambulance sitting around (Ford van style). I asked the guy what he was going to do with it and he told me it was for sale. He said it was all original, 400ci big block, auto tranny, and he thought it had around 66000 or 68000 miles on it although the odometer showed 35000. I asked the price and he said "I only want $9,500 for it." I about choked right there. It hasn't been started or moved in about 6 years and it has the typical rust issues for these. Didn't get to look at the bottom side cause all 4 tires were flat and I couldn't see under it.
Am I crazy thinking he's crazy for wanting that much for it?

I thot so. I even had plans for it. Put a 68 front clip on it, repaint it orange and white or all white with some ghost flames (the whole firefighter thing), and redo the interior. Would make an awesome tailgate rig too.

We can all thank Barrett-Jackson and Ebay for that.

It would take a special person to even want to buy that (sounds like you're that special person.....nothing wrong with that) and it will take an even more special person to buy it for that much. Basically he's never going to sell it (at least not for anything near that price)

maybe $950 and that would be a stretch...people are off their rockers about classic prices, but I think it started before Barrett Jackson and Ebay, they just made it worse. So it will rot in place and when the man dies his family will scrap it for $300.

I have an abulance on the parts board for half that and it will run and drive to your house. BUT,it is missing the lights and siren.Very little rust either.

Re: I wish I could have this. It is way cool.
do they work or is it just for show? I guess Im asking if there is some sort of tunnel ram up under the hood that feeds the carb. I think it looks pretty cool

Re: I wish I could have this. It is way cool.
Well I'm glad I'm not crazy. I thought I was going to faint when he told me that. If it was around $1000 to $1500 I would think seriously about it. He said "Just put a battery and some fresh gas in and it'll fire right up." Uhhhh....right. It's been sitting in that spot for around 5 or 6 years without even being started according to him. Id think it might take some work to get it going. It MAY run after gas and a battery, but probably not real well. That carb is probaby varnished up.
As far as the scoops go...I assume that they are for heat escape. With it being gas, it'll run hotter than todays deisel engines and since ambulances sit and idle ALOT I'd bet that they act something like louvers in the hood would act. Quote:
