After having problems with my hood alignment I got a set of used hood hinges with springs. I have a powdercoater here in town where I work and they don't charge me to have things powdercoated. So I thought I'd have them powdercoat the hinges. They looked awesome and I installed them back in November. This fixed my alignment problem. My dilemna is that I haven't popped my hood in probably a month and I went out to install my new Euro headlights and my hood won't stay up. I apparently need new springs but-

Question-Should I have not powdercoated the springs? Did that mess up the geometry of the spring?

Hmmmmm. That is a good question, as I have just purchased a set of new GM hinges for mine. I plan to powdercoat the actual hinge, but was debating on the spring (thought the coating might crack as the spring stretched and such).
Now, you have me wondering about applying the heat for the extended length of time?!?!?!
(I will follow this thread to see the verdict!)

common sense is telling me that 400 degree temps for powder coating might just do damage to the springs. I was thinking about doing my hinges, but not the springs.....

Sooooooooooo, does that mean powerdercoating will damage coil spings, other suspension parts, and frames? Not mocking, I'm asking a serious question.

400-450 degrees in powdercoating should not hurt springs. Look how many suspension coil springs are powder coated.

I sand blasted my original springs and hinges off my 72 when I repainted it and powdercoated them in black with the eastwood powdercoating kit (20 minutes in the oven at 400 degrees). I have had no problems with the springs, they hold the hood fine. I bet it was just a concidence.

I probably will not powdercoat my new springs, but just wanted to ask. I especially don't want to look like an idiot and make the same mistake twice.

I am not sure if i am following the questions & reply's. i am not understanding why the powder coat process would hurt the springs or anything else?? i am now wondering how the springs(hinges) that you buy new are coated??? i am not a pro on these trucks & would like to know (learn) more...

I would love to have them powdercoated just because they'd match the hinges. Maybe I'll try it again. The springs were used I haven't forgotten that part.

Yellow69.... Sweet looking truck!

It's gotta be the used springs. I used new (OEM) hinges and new springs. I powdercoated the hinges black and the springs clear. I stretched the springs on a couple lengths of angle iron notched on the ends so the powdercoater could shoot them easily. The springs came out looking like billet. No problems holding up the hood and the powdercoat flexes just fine.

Biscayne:

I hate springs... They'll inevitably fly off somewhere you can't find them or embed themselves in your skin when they snap off the tool. The hood hinge springs are pretty mongo too. Don't want a hood hinge stuck in my eyeball.

I made a spring installer/remover tool to make the job easier. Pictures attached. This way, with the inner fenders out, I can set the hood on the fenders and mount the hinges w/o springs from underneath. Then I lift and prop the hood and install the springs with this gizmo. Works slick. Other folks use a rope and grunt... but as I mentioned... I hate springs.

I know somebody who sent in coils for the back of his car to get powder coated and they came back sagging and where really loose.

I powder coated mine a nice gloss black.Turned out great with no problems.I believe they are the orig. hinges and springs.

No actual pic of the hinges but you can see them on the left of this pic.

My paint has not cracked yet. There is not enough flex in one area to crack the paint. Mabye if you did not get good bond you could have problems.

I sell a lot of new truck parts...I do NOT sell new hood hinge springs! I have never had a set that was not good, except from engine fires. If the hood stays up...the springs are good.
I sell a lot of hinges: NOS, repro and used/restored. They need to be excellent for the hood to open, close and adjust properly.
We blast & powdercoat a lot of hinges & springs, without any problems. We preassemble the hinge & spring before installing it on the truck, to keep from fighting it over the "fresh" painted fenders & hoods.
CAUTION: If you powdercoat your hinges, they will be "TIGHT"...very tight! You must work them back-and-forth until they are freed up and move smoothly, by hand...then lube them and install the springs. IF you don't, when you pull the hood down it can bend the hood. I am sure many of the new cowl hoods were blamed for bending, when new/powdercoated hinges were installed without proper preperation.
