64' K10 Project Long Bed
Grandson visiting and we are getting ready to start his 1964, K10 project. We are looking it over, not a lot of rust, cab has a little on right side floor in kick panel area, and door bottom pinch weld gone on both sides, bed pretty good, however, brace at left wheel well has punched through side.
The frame and drivetrain not very rusty, think it has been AZ truck, built in St. Louise. Drive train on initial look appears original. Missing front drive shaft. Two tone paint. Overall sheet metal looks good. The frame and cab ID show it to be an original K truck, with two tone paint. This intended to be a two to three year project as grandson is freshman in HS, and I am 65. He plans to drive it some for fun would be second vehicle for him. Kind of thinking need to evaluate the drive train, trans, transfer box, diffs as part of first stage of projects. Also thinking the cab restoration would be another first step. Sure we will be looking for lots of help as we start project. Les |

Re: 64' K10 Project Long Bed
Your grandson's truck looks solid and a great starting point for his build. Good luck and I hope you guys have a lot of fun working on it. It is great to see a young kid interested in these old trucks.

Re: 64' K10 Project Long Bed
Randy, Owen
Thanks for encouragement, will look at other builds for knowledge on how to restore it. Any specific suggestions on builds to learn from? It does appear to be a solid truck with just a little rust in a few areas in the cab, along with a few small dents here and their. Have no knowledge of drivetrain condition yet, plan to take a closer look this week. Happy it is a two color paint truck. Les |

Re: 64' K10 Project Long Bed
Thanks everybody for the support on new projects. Plan is to document current condition and probably ask a lot of questions. Assessing and recording everything before disassembly for now. Kind of cool mud flaps from back then.

Re: 64' K10 Project Long Bed
Dana 44 front axle tag picture. Looks like it has 3:73 axle gears, which was standard for K10s from research.

Re: 64' K10 Project Long Bed
Les, Glad to see you are finally starting to get into this truck. I still can't make up my mind if I want to build my '65 as a K20 or swb flt lowered truck. I can't even start until I get my canned ham camper done. Truck looks great by the way. I know you have been building that 292. Upload some of those pics when you get a chance. I will checking this one often for updates.

Re: 64' K10 Project Long Bed
Thanks for the encouragement, plan to get the 292s out next week and our grandson will take apart one of them as his first engine overhaul. The other we will try to start.
FYI , found the following Chevrolet Part Illustration and information manual, nice expanded views of parts/components, along with information like axle ratio codes, etc. I need more review of it and will post more types of data/ information contained. |

Re: 64' K10 Project Long Bed
Neat book Less, I would like to take a look at the 4x4 pages. I am going to try to adapt my ho52 rear end with brakes from a 14bolt rear, Since you can't find brake parts anymore for the 3/4-1 ton rear ends.

Re: 64' K10 Project Long Bed
Josh and I have been cleaning up space for room to take 64 apart.
Using a new engine stand that is working very nice, below are pictures. Very strong and no engine sag. Also the extra wheel helps, wo/ hindering moving the engine. It is a torin part number T26801. The engine is a 1965, extra 292, that we are going to take apart and save for future part needs. Les |

Re: 64' K10 Project Long Bed
Josh and I starting to disassemble an extra 1965, 292 engine purchased used. Seller said the engine was from a low mileage ambulance. So far, the cylinder head is off and the cylinder walls show no signs of ridge wear. Have not looked at a the cylinder walls yet, but quick looks good so far.
Question, the 292 engines typically have a wear ridge at the top of cylinders where rings stop? Still evaluating engine, and need to make decision on, whether to keep as whole engine or save for parts. Original plan was for it to be a parts engine, however, looks to be in good condition so far. Going to take the oil pan off tomorrow. What do you think, could the rings still be good? Les thanks, Les Last edited by aotte1; 06-30-2014 at 08:58 PM. Reason: edit words |

Re: 64' K10 Project Long Bed
I can still see some milling marks on the cylinder wall...long as there are no cracks or major issues with the block you'll be fine...have it tanked, magnafluxed, and checked for cracks. More then likely a low mileage engine will be fine.
