Speedwarning Complete.... with Video
finally got a speedwarning cluster completed I've been working on. I went through through this one completely,
http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...=speed+warning thought it would be cool to video the workings/buzzer of a s.w. cluster. so I removed the lens (truck is apart right now) where I could manually move the speedometer needle so it intercepted the speed warning needle. Viola! the buzzer tells you that it's time to slow it down. very cool prehistoric stuff! going to sell this one to fund my air ride project.... too bad I really think the speed warning mechanisms are quite interesting. may have to find another!!!! a little dark. looked good in the video screen though!

My 68 Gmc has one of those. I bought a tac vac cluster for it and may have to add that to the cluster as well. Jim

Re: Speedwarning Complete.... with Video
thats cool! ive never actually seen one work before!
when you flipped the needle once it went way past the mark and buzzer went off (as in stopped buzzing) does this mean on the road if you exceeded the speedwarning by a considerable amount the buzzer would infact quit buzzing? ...kinda seems encouraging to go faster

Re: Speedwarning Complete.... with Video
^^hum, I swear those s.w. clusters ran into 1970.... then again, I think you may have something there. when were the first cruise controls offered on these models?
Jason, I had to clean the contacts a bit after that video. the speedo needle will continue to buzz once it goes past the speedwarning needle.

Re: Speedwarning Complete.... with Video
TCB-1=I'm trying to do the same thing you are with the speed warning dash. I have two complete dashes, one with the speed minder set-up and a tach dash withan air pressure guage. I have a buzzer I just got at the swap meet. I tried to hook everything up to see if mine works before I restore everything but I can't get the speed minder to go off=let me explian, I got the buzzer to "buzz" by hooking positive/negative and it buzzedthen i hooked the harness(white wire) to the stud on the housing and the orange wire to battery, used my cruise control cable and cordless drill to work the speedo and nothing happened. I grounded the dash and tried again but that did not work either. In your video, you said you had your ignition to acc-is there something in the printed curcuit that makes everything work? any ideas on how I can test the speed minder(dash unit) out of the truck? thanks for sharing..... Re: Speedwarning Complete.... with Video
let's try to figure this out, Steve.
verify that there is indeed a very small metal nib/coil on the back of the speedometer needle. verify that there is a small nib on the frontside of the speed warning needle that "catches" the speedometer nib when it passes. with a voltage meter, check to see whether you have any continuity between the wire that comes from the speedometer to the speedometer body itself ONLY when the speedometer needle is moved past the s.w. needle. you can move the speedo needle manually if you have it in you hand. what the speedwarning needle is doing is creating a ground circuit once it touches the speedometer. this circuit is open when below the desired speed, and closed once that speed is acheived. in my video, I said that the ignition was switched to acc. this is because I had the s.w. harness (orange wire) plugged into a "key on" power source. if you go to a direct 12 volt "constant on" source, you can bypass this step. testing the whole setup is a bit more real world, that why I did it that way. the ground that runs to the speedo through the printed circuit is grounding the speedo body only. once the needles pass each other, this creates an additional ground for the buzzer. I'd start your troubleshooting by checking your speedo components, i.e. both needles as described above. then check continuity once the needle pass. if your getting sporadic weak continuity signals, try to clean the s.w. needle nib CAREFULLY with a cut down emery board. if your getting a ground when the needle pass, your pretty much there! I would remove the lens in the cluster, plug your white wire to the rear of the cluster, plug your orange wire to a switched or contant on 12 volt source. plug your cluster in, and move the speedo needle manually. hope I helped instead of making it more difficult! if all else fails, I'd be happy to look at it for you, free. Merry Christmas!

Good video Doug, I've never actually heard one of the buzzers before and I've always wondered how loud they were.

Re: Speedwarning Complete.... with Video
Chris, probably loud enough to bug the crap out of ya! actually once it's mounted in the proper location, it wouldn't be bad, but still noticeable.
reminds me of the "door open" buzzers on most 70's model GM vehicles.
