Help (from 1ton guys)

I just bought a 1972 Chevy dump truck it has old split rims. I want to get new rims. Called to day to see if I could get new ones and I was told that the 72 has smaller 1/2 studs and the new one use 9/16 studs and larger lug hole. What are you guys with 1 tons using?

1971 and 1972 C30 trucks have the larger 9/16 studs.
According to Accuride's wheel catalog, wheels from 1976-2000 C/K trucks are the same (16"x6", part #29587). These wheels have a 4.56" center bore, and are supposed to be used with a clamp plate and 90 degree cone nuts (clamp plate is GM part #472536).
Previous to 1976, the factory single piece wheels were 16.5", and they will work too.

Thanks for the info Chris and Longhorn Man. I have never owned a 1 ton before. Rick, I'm going to build a shop. I need to put in new driveway in and patch up the road in front of my house. I'm going to be making a lot trips to the stone quarry. The good thing is that it is about 10 miles from work. I can get a load on the way home.

hi yes the old split rims are no good any more they can take off your head
or kill you if you dont know what you are doing every who has a one ton is going with bud rims its a nice thuck would like to know more about it

all the 1-tons here ran the 18" wheels in 67-72.they were also split rim.my 72 I put a set of newer 16" rims and plates on it.I needed to put longer studs in the hubs for the plates to fit.

I ran road service for Goodyear repairing truck tires. That job will make a man out of you. 18x19.5 tries on cement trucks were not my favorite. Ther are several types of split rims. The ones that split in the middle are the worst. I won't touch them. You never know if they are going to stay together. The others are not so bad. I will be removing them as soon as I can locate replacements. The truck was used on a farm. The front tires are old nylon bias plys and are dryrotted the rear are the same. The cab is rusted out but the dump bed works great. After I get the new shop up I'll think about replacing the cab. For now just an old work horse.

Okay, I got used wheels off a 76 1 ton dually. Lug nuts and plates. Now I have to replace the front studs, too short. No problem I can do the front studs. Now what is it going to take to do the rear studs? Will I have to take the axles out?

My '67 C-30 came with 17.5" 1 piece wheels, and I have a '69 GMC 3500 dumptruck that has the 2 piece 18" wheels.

You will have to take the out axles out to get the brake drums off because that's what the studs are in. You'll have to remove the axle with the 8 bolts out on the hub. Then there is a wide flat nut, that has sheet metal tabs around it that you'll have to bend out the way to get off. Once that's off, you can pull out the bearings and remove the rear drum so you upgrade the studs.
