Hi all

Managed to fit front clip this week, it was not as hard a I first thought.
Now I need to sort rear end.

Nice job of trimming and fitting it up to the frame. The subframe and frame look exactly parallel too so that should work great.

Looks good.

I question if some of your welding is getting good penetration. But what I've always read is with the FEET of weld you're putting in, you can get by welding the clip on with a 110v mig welder.

How did you transfer the "step" in the clip to trim the frame? Trace it onto cardboard?

I don't think I've ever seen the upper flange of the frame used like you did as a strap, but that seems like any outstanding idea.

Oh, PS: Dod you adjust your wheel base as many do to lengthen it? I've heard anywhere from 1/2" to 3/4"

Just remember (you will find out soon enough) welding that on is like motor mounts in an engine swap, the easiest part! You have a lot of work ahead with the rad support and bumper and inner fenders and all that good stuff.

As nice a job you did with this, it will all come easy too but you are far from over.

Over on 67-72chevytrucks.com's '47-'59 board I remember SOMEONE posting a thread where the guy made a jig for his frame ends and core support. He welded (or bolted, I can't remember) this jig on and THEN cut off the front of his frame leaving the stubs of the frame and locations for the core support in their exact prior locations.

Very cool fab. I agree with both of these observations:

However let me make this clear for the sake of the law.

He didn't "transfer" the vin, that would land him in jail. He "retained" the VIN not modifying or transferring it at all!

And yes an excellent job was done with that! Got to be serious about the vin.

Why is this important? The Camaro is no more. It was junked, right? The truck still has its original VIN (wherever they used to put it).

Welding will be fine done with a 240v 180 mig. good penetration both sides.
Yes I used a cardboard template. The strap idea just happened, seemed to make sense.
Wheel base is now 115" I did refit the cab and try the front fenders to check how the wheels looked in the arch before final welding.

There are lots of ways to sort front mounts for rad, fenders and bumper not sure what way to go yet.

The point is he kept the original VIN. It's all matter of semantics. I was referring to the term "transfer" he DID'NT "transfer" the vin. As Transferring a VIN is illegal. And if there was a VIN left on that sub frame, THAT could get you into trouble, it would need to be removed as that isn't the VIN of the truck.

This is how I see it here in California, other states will have other laws.

It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.
