I have a 78 and changed the gauge cluster to 82 model out of a parts truck of mine. The only problem that I'm having is that when I turn on my parking lights or my head lights my fuel gauges goes to empty. It seems to work just fine as long as I dont use my lights. Any sugestions would be very helpful. I can turn the truck off and back on and it works just fine just can not turn on any lights.

Try checking your ground When the lights are on your gauge might be fighting for the proper voltage needed to work. Also make sure the plug in the back of the cluster is making good contact Good luck on your problem.

I'm pretty good with the dash clusters

and the 78 to 82 is an acceptable swap. I would pull the cluster back out and check the 18 small copper strips that the connector plugs into to make sure that nothing is crossed up. The Cluster lights do have a common that comes from the headlight switch so assuming it was OK before it should not be a bad headlight switch, also there could be a portion of your PC strip on the cluster that has a bad spot. look good at the back of your 82 Cluster to make sure that you don't see any bad spots.(burnt, heavily corroded ), welcome to the forums.
