71 3/4 4x4
I have a friend that has told me about a 71 3/4 4X4 with 55,000 yes it runs doors close and has a utilty bed all for the asking price of...... 1000.00 Now I have not seen this but I trust my Buddy from what he has said there is no rust everything is in great shape it does need some work on the carb it leaks a little. This truck use to be a old Forest Service truck so it's the ugly green.
He said the rearend looks bigger than a 14b. I have no Idea how this would of been setup as to the frontend or the tranny/transfercase for a motor I know it's a V8 and has Marader or something like that on the Valve cover. Right off hand I think this a great deal but I still want to see it before I do the deal. But if it is what he says it will make a good truck for me to move to Texas the end of this month or the begining of the next. Anyone have any imput on old Forest Service trucks or what the running gear would be. Thanks Cethern

I'd say a 350 engine, 4spd tranny 205 transfer case, eaton/corp rear axle and a dana 44 front. Probably 4.56 gears and possibly a rear locker. Sounds like a good deal for the drivetrain alone if it's in working order.

I kept the drivetrain. Body/bad and chassis are gone. 1981 K30, 350/465/205 dana 60 and dually 14 bolt. Has a G80, and a flat bed. Going to replace the flat bed. 1985 K20, 350/400/208 10 bolt and SF 14 bolt. I wonder where I can find some 1 tons. Hmmmmm |

cool
For the life of me I could not remember when the 350 came out lol. But I was also told it had a Auto in it not a 4sp so I'm hoping a 400,
not to sure about the front diff it could either be a d60 or d44, I was told from a guy the Forest Service got the HD parts I mite have to take sometime off and go see it or most likely what will happen is I'll show up with money in hand and see for my self. I should add it's long bed and not a duelie. Anyone have pic's I'm sure someone has pic's of a old Forest Service truck. Cethern

It's probably "Invader" on the valve covers and if so most likely a GMC (quad headlights). Being a Gov't vehicle, my money is on a 307 V8. Is it a 2 or 4 bbl carb? If 2, then 307, if 4, then 350

decent deal
Sounds good as described. Is it a GMC? Did it say Invader on the valve cover? That would be the Eaton rear end. They didn't have TH400 in 72 but doesn't mean that one might have been swapped in later. 205 transfer case. Stock the front end will be a D44HD. I'm in Colorado (Arvada) so if you need any parts locating help, let me know. I've also had very good luck with Marv. Saxton in Golden. His number is 303-279-1720, he specializes in 67-72 Chevys. I'd buy the truck but then again, I have a hard time not buying trucks!! Seem to remember your Blazer in the Truck trader not too long ago??

sounds like a good buy...the Th400 wasn't available in 4x4's til the 73 up era, and the stock axle will be a regular dana 44. the d44HD didnt come out until later, also.

the later d44HD had bigger axletubes and ujoints. i think the dana 44 that came under our trucks is the 44-5F, at least thats what mine has. the disc brake models may be different.

now I have more ?
Hi Lance
nope that wasn't my k5 in the auto trader. I have stoped by the guy out in Golden but he was not there at the time I'll try again the next time I'm in town. As for the Invader good question for my buddy. He has said it has a 4bbl Qjet. And I'll bet the guess on the Eaton is right on. I guess I still hope for a bigger front diff than a d44.. oh well I wish I had pics of this truck but as I have said I haven't seen it yet All I know is it's up by Woodland park and now is used for home maintance or was. the old guy that has it starts reg. and thats about it. If it is a GMC that would be cool I have always liked the 4 headlite setup. But then could it be a 72? the only way I can tell them apart is from the front signals (Without being there) did the GMC's do anything different in that area? I'm only guessing at the 71 as I was told it had no turn signals in the front bumper which is stock. Cethern

truck
Ya, a little more difficult to tell on GMCs. 71 and 72 Chevys both have turn signals in the bumper. A 72 GMC will have the plastic interior door panels and the rearview mirror on the windshield while earlier models will have the steel door panels and mirror attached to the windshield header. Those are the easy clues. Of course check for disc or drum front diff. Drums will indicate it is a 70 or older. Would be tough to tell for sure just looking at an exterior picture if it is a 69-72 though. We all hope for that D60 to show up in a cheap truck but if it's there, it would definitely be a swap, not stock. My 71 GMC 3/4 4x4 has a D60 rear and a D44 up front stock so you could have either in the rear but if it's huge it's an Eaton. If you decide to pass or buy to sell, let me know. I know a guy in Black Forest who I could pass the info. onto. Give Marv a call next time. He's a one man show but is very accomodating and could meet you down there if he's not there anyway. Good luck!

Thanks
That helps alot Lance I had forgot about the door panels I had a 70/71 Blazer and a 2wd 3/4 but that was a while ago and as with most cars an trucks (I wish I had them both again). And have forgot the little things about them.
I just got the 72 back in November and haven't spent to much time with it other than the tune up. lack funds and a ex wife. I'll have to call my buddy tonight and drill him again for more info... Cethern

If that utility bed as installed 'back in the day', then it may well be a long/step. They removed the steps on the sides (leaving the fender in there) and mounted the tool boxes over the G.M. bed sides.

Thanks for the pic
Thank you Longhorn for the pic
My Buddy that has seen it said the bed looks to heavy as hell lol but if it is a long step then I could find fenders for it and take the boxes off. I had thought of a newer style bed but first I need to get this thing home Before the wish list get to big. Cethern
