383 stroker
i was talking to a guy about a 383 stroker motor, and he was saying you put 350 internals into a 400 block. but dont you put a 400 crank into a 350 block. and dont you also have to have the crank journals turned down so they will fit into the 350? just trying to get it all clear. he said he built one before. thanks

I believe a 383 is a 350 block with a 400 crank( yes you have to turn down the main journals and possibly do a little grinding near the cam for clearance issues) A 350 crank in a 400 block is a 377(which is destroked) have to get spacers that go between the mains and the block. I think the pistons have to be special ordered too because of the different length of rods in the 350 and 400. Not a 100% sure on all this, but if not someone on this board will help us out...lots of experienced people in the know on here!

Seems kind of backward to depower a SBC 400. I think I'd put a 400 crank in it and have a 400 instead of a 383. I don't know much about 400s but I think he is doing it wrong, not sure if it'll work, as 400s seem to have a lot of 400 only stuff. Maybe he just told you his numbers backwards.

i thought he was all a$$ backwards too. i have a 400 bored 30 over in my truck and i just want to go bigger. not smaller

actually the way he is wanting to do it is call destroked. it is better for high reving engines. if you wanted to put a big turbo and wanted a high reving engine you would do this.
now for your 383 stroker you want to get a good block buy a stroke kit. it should include ... crank-for a 400 balancer- 400 flywheel- 400 stock 5.7 rods or 6.0 rods stroker pistions witch are smaller top to bottom the kit should also come with all your bearings I know I am forgetting something but it will come to me. ohh make sure that the engine is balanced and ground. when i did mine we meausered all the pistions and rods and made them all the same. when you put it togathe you have to machine the block for clearance. hope this helps Darren

A 350 with a 400 crank is a 377. You have to bore it .030 to get a 383, and you can go .060 for a 388. You can also de-stroke a 400 block (350 crank) for the same amount of cubes but you get less low end torque.

go to www.enginekits.com and check out page 10 in their catalog. 84 and down kit includes rings, rods, new stroker crank, rod and main bearings and complete gasket kit for $469, for another $199 they will balance the assy and include a new balancer and flex plate.

thanks. it sounds like it can be done both ways. but the best way is the 400 crank in a 350 block

has anyone looked into a 434 ci small block 4 inch stroke 4.155 bore
I'm thinking 434 with 210 AFRS single plane intake not sure on cam yet |

Get the tall deck 400 block ("Rocket" block) and build it to 468! Now that is a monster small block!

Anybody running the new crate 383 from GM Performance. Havent heard any real world tales yet, just the magazine articles.
