How do I find what rear end gears I got?

I guess the cover has to come off, but then what?
If I get the #'s can somebody tell me what the mean!

Pulling the cover is the sure way to determine the ratio. Usually the ring gear is stamped with the number of teeth on the ring gear and pinion. For example: 43:14 which means 43 teeth on the ring gear and 14 teeth on the pinion. Dividing 43 by 14= 3.0714286 or it is a 3.07 to 1 ratio.

Another method we use is to mark the one of the drums and backing plates
with chalk. Mark the shield and rear end housing. With the truck on level ground, push the truck straight for one revolution of the rear wheels. Count the turns that the pinion makes. If it is just over three turns on the pinion than it is a 3:07.

I was told I have a stock posi 3:73 but I want to make sure before
I buy the 3:07's
