What the _ _ _ _?

I just started tearing my 1971 K10 project apart. I opened the rear diff to start cleaning it up and found it wasn't opened, but had a posi or locker of some kind. We started looking closer and found the axle perches are 2" wide (from a car?) instead of 2 1/2" and have some really bad welds on them as well as the shock mounts. But what I really need help with is the gears in the rear, a 12 bolt, but the gears are stamped with a 3/83 manufacture date. So if anyone can help...PLEASE?!?!? Oh yeah the whole gear stamp if anyone can decode it: 1 GM 339635 11 41 3 83. I'll post pictures of the posi lookin thing when I get to work tomarrow.

it's a 3:73, thats what the 11 14 means thats the ring and pinion tooth count.

GM Gov-Lok

I don't know what it came out of, but its definetly a GM Gov-Lok differential.

Gov loc aka Granade locker.

That came out of a truck. They did not use that in a car. The 83 date is the od part. 12 bolts were pretty well phased out by 82.

Honestly if you drive like a sane person a Gov lock is not bad. What blows them up is a lot of skinny peddle with one tire in the slick on one tire on a solid surface or both tires spinning and then one catching traction. Then the "Granade" and it ugly. Splitting the case clean in half is not unheard of.

When you put it back in the truck the easy way to check them is get in a parking lot and get rolling about 10mph and coast then start turning tight. If it's a good one you should feel it slow you down as it locks up.
