exhaust question

I recently put 3 in. exhaust on my truck and was wondering if I should put a cross over pipe (h-pipe) in?
I heard you get better sound and less back pressure. Is that true? What kind of prerks will you get connecting the 2 exhaust pipes?
thanks and Happy Father's Day to all the Dads out there

It is also called an "X" pipe and they really help!! You will get loads better sound from the pipes, and less back pressure. Perks I am not sure other what than I what I already said.

My experience is the sound is better (but louder) without the pipe--performance may improve slightly with it..........don't expect miracles!

An H or X pipe will mellow the exhaust note a tad, & give a more "tuned" sound. They do help with low/ mid range tork, without affecting top end. Also said to help fuel milage......Dunno on that one(leadfoot ). i have run an H pipe on any perf app that i have run over the last 20yrs, 7 wouldnt go any other way crazyL

I just got my enine running @ 1 hour ago after the shop put a new 2 1/2" aluminized pipe into a "X System" then into a pair of Proflow mufflers and from there above the rear axle and straight out the back (into stainless steel tips). Man I am IMPRESSED!!!! It sounds really nice and smooth. I was going to put a cheapo exhaust on and upgrade it after... and I'm REALLY glad I chose to spend the extra $$$ on it now! Regards Doug

Read a post a while back about this, and it made a lot of sense to me. All SBC's are balances internally, through the manifold, and therefor don't need an H pipe. Anyone has any legitimate Dyno info to prove it wrong I'd sure like to see it.

My combo does have the heat passage in the intake, nut not in the heads(Edelbrock rpm). Many of the aftermarket heads do not have the heat passage. As far as dyno info to dispute that claim, I dont have any.....I will say that i have run several sb chevs with stock intake & heads, & the H pipe does help 1 that I saw a dramatic diff on was a 327 in an old flatbed, with 305 heads on (to up the compression). this was a heavy truck, with 4.10 gears, & a fairly big cam for the app. the addition of that H pipe made a very noticeable difference in the pulling power in the lower end.....it made a beleiver out of this old man! crazyL

when i went and got my exhaust done, they said there wasnt room for a "x" pipe, so i went with a "H" pipe. do some of you guys have an "X" on your ride?

The crossover in the intake is not very big, & with headers it only affects 2 cylinders.

Here's a test of X- vs. H-pipes:
