Motor Mount question....
Alright, I am getting ready to lift the engine to change the oil pan gasket. And, I would like to change the motor mounts........again
My questions is are there different sizes of motor mounts that I can chose from? I have a 72 SWB 1/2 ton. The motor mounts are very flat. It there a way to get taller mounts? Some may remember my trobles with trying to mount headers, and a taller mount would fix my problem. Thanks, Nick |

I don't know if the towers are different between '69 and '72. If they're the same you don't have a lot of options since the mount has a bolt running through the center. I've heard there used to be some Energy Suspension Systems mounts that would work, but I never took the time to try them. I just got some stock replacements, and I think they're only in one thickness.
Part of the problem is the fact that the bolt holes need to line up. It's hard enough to get the stock ones in there. If they were taller you'd have to have a different alignment pattern between the 2 bolt holes that bolt the mount to the block and the bolt hole in the center for the tower. Anyone else?

Well, the problem that I am running into is that some of the headers(Dynomax) that I have tried, the #1 primary tube on the pass side goes down then back, and it is hitting the motor mount tower.
Then when I try a header like the Hooker or Headman, where the #1 primary tube goes back then down, they hit the lower control arm. So, I figured if I could find a taller mount, then that would cure the problem. |

I bought some hookers and haven't put them in yet. This HAS to be a problem that has a solution, because so many people on this board are running headers on small blocks.
What are people using for motor mounts other than stock?

Just FYI- When I ran into this problem with the first set of headers, I replaced the motor mounts. Now they have less than 500 miles on them, and I have been through 5 different sets of headers and none of them fit.
There is no evidence of any frame damage, or anything out of whack. So I have no idea what the problem is. My only other option is to go with a set of shorties. But, like you said, there has to be a problem somewhere, and I would like to find it. Thanks, Nick |

I have a set of Summit generic headers on mine and never had a problem with fit. You may need to change the mounting holes in the frame to move the engine back/forward to get enough clearance though. Good luck and keep on truckin'........Jerry

There is something wrong here. Your engine is either on the wrong frame stands or in the wrong holes or something.
I have personally run Hooker headers on the 350 in my orange truck. No problems at all with hitting anything. Totally stock mounts. My old 72 that I sold to my neighbor, I put Dynomax headers on it. Again, 350 on stock mounts, no problem at all with anything hitting. That tells me there must be something weird going on with your setup. If you can post pictures, I guarantee we can figure it out. Please post pics of engine frame stands if you can get one. Here's the Dynomax headers on the 72 with a 350

i think your frame engine stands are not correct.out of that many header sets/diff brands,no way wrong that many times.
