Who here is running a 350ci with a 3 in the tree??
I am going to swap out the inline for the mighty 350 that most of the guys here are running. How does a 350 run when it's backed by a 3 speed? Will the 3 speed be good enough if I am not planning on using it for a lot of highway travelling? Do I have to replace the rad to supply more coolant to the bigger engine?? If I add headers to this 350, will the shift linkage for the column shift be in the way? sorry bout all the questions, i just want to know everything there is, before I do the engine swap. Please help!! Thanks again

I got one. The headers will have to be the right ones to fit. Some headers will say not for use with column shift vehicles. As for driveability, it does great. Sometimes intown driving is a pain, but that's to be expected.

If the motor is making any torque don't try burnouts or second gear scratches 'cause I've broken 2 input shafts that way. As long as you don't lean on them, the tranny will last.

Mine came stock from the factory with a 350/3-on-the-tree. Everyone hated it from day two...possibly why my grandpa was so eager to give a 3 year old truck to his daughter when she went to college.

As for the radiator, if yours is in good shape, and everything is good, you should have no problem. If your radiaror is crappy....you'll know on your test drive.

the short-bed is factory 307 w/ 3-speed and now has a 350... I've put 80K miles on that truck myself and I've hardly had any problems with the set-up... make sure though that when you shift from 1st to 2nd you be careful because the linkage can bind on the column... hard to explain without pics.
as for cooling, grandpa ordered the truck with HD radiator so I've never had overheating problems... maybe one of these days I should post a pic with the options plate, it's kinda neat to look at. ------------------ '70 C-10 Short/Fleet 350 (in the family since new) '70 C-10 Long/Fleet 307 (the Death Machine because it seems like it'll kill you to drive in it)

I think damn near every 3 in the tree binds when shifting from 1st-2nd. Mine does it all the time. I have a floor shift conversion kit for the 3 speed, so I might go with that for now. Thanks for the info guys

I just did the I6 to V8 swap in January, using V8 mounts. I'm still runing the saginaw 3 speed with a floor shift. It does just fine with a 3.73 rear end, just feels like it needs another gear when I get over 65. I had to rebuild my radiator last summer so I went with a 3-core and have no overheating problems, I would think the original 2-core may be a little small. My problem with headers was the clutch linkage. Check the footnotes carefully on what headers to use, I went with Heddman 69092. Good luck, the extra power is great.
