Sony CDX5270 need wiring help (again)

OK someone here helped with the last Kenwood unit I had but now this Chevelle I bought has a Sony Cdx5270 and the wiring is all hosed up in it also. the radio won't come to life, but the CD plays through one speaker only.. why don't these guys put the units manual in the glove box?? anyway if someone can help with a wiring diagram or just written text i would appreciate it. Most Sony's are prolly the same, but i thought that about the Kenwoods and it wasn't so. . thanx , DAVE

from the sony:

red: ignition
yellow: constant power
black: ground

white: left front+
white w/black: left front-

gray: right front +
gray w/black: right front -

green: left rear +
green w/black: left rear -

Purple: right rear +
purple w/black: right rear-

As far as the wiring in your truck if they arent factory wires just use a battery put it between the two ends of speaker wire ( does that make sense?)

When you say the radio won't come to life, do you mean it doesn't do anything or all you get is static? Hit the seek button on the radio to see if it tries scanning for a station, if it does but keeps scanning without stopping, it's probably an antenna problem, make the antenna is pluged in to the back of the unit. If the antenna jack is plugged into the unit but radio continuously scans for a station, I would say your antenna itself is probably bad. If after pressing seek it stops on a station but you don't hear anything, it's probably either improperly wired or blown speakers.

Also, if the antenna jack is plugged into the back of the unit so you decide on buying a new antenna, you might want to try pulling the head unit out and plugging up the new antenna inside the car before going through the hassle of running wires and stuff. I had a radio quit working once and found out that the antenna wiring inside the unit had shorted out somehow, didn't cost much to have it repaired at a local shop though.

If the display is blank when you cut the radio on, you might need to connect the illumination wire(not mentioned in 'Cochino12's' list), it should be orange with white stripe. You can connect it together with the red or yellow wire. If you connect it to the yellow wire though, your display will always stay on and could drain your battery if left sitting for a long period of time. I would probably tie it in with the red wire. If all is good and it still doesn't work I would say it's probably the head unit is bad.

If you determine it might be the speaker wiring, check 'cochino12's' wire descriptions to see if those colors are present, I found my Sony install instructions and they're the same so should be right. If not, the speakers wires are usually bunched together on one side of the connector. Each speaker wire pair will usually be the same main color but the negative wire will have a line of either gray or black running down it(Example: A green wire with another green wire with a black or gray strip either directly beside, above or below it.). Just find all the pairs of wires like that and they should be your speaker wires. All the other wires are usually solid with no stripes and won't have a matching colored wire with a stripe.

Do you know if the ignition switch/accesory wire is hooked up or not. That's the one that shuts down the radio automatically when you turn the key off so you don't have to manually turn it off. If you want you can get a probe or test light and search for a wire that only has power when the ignition is turned on and tap into it. If I remember correctly it is usually red.

Anyway hope this helps, if need any more help, you can IM me at landpro00@hotmail.com.

GOOD LUCK!!!

Sorry wasn't thinking! The orange and white striped illumination wire just ties in to your headlight switch. It controls the lights that illuminate your units buttons. Don't really need it if you don't want, your display should still function properly without it connected. Otherwise, just find a wire from your headlight switch that has power only when lights are on and tap the illumination wire into it.

I should have written down the exact colors like i did with the Kenwood but they are spliced into so close to plug and all taped up that its hard to see. I specifically remember seeing a dark blue wire unconnected and yet not in Cochinos wiring?? thanx for help so far. I got major sidetracked from a radio right now though. DAVE

so where do you run the constant wire too. i've been having problems with mine because the red and yellow wire are run together and it only has power when the ignition is on. so it doesnt keep the same stations and stuff like that.

The yellow wire is for constant 12 volt power. You will need to locate one under the dash somewhere. Most, if not all, of the '87 and earlier trucks did not need this wire since they did not have digital tuning or clocks. You could probably tie this wire into like your door pin switch or something. Just use a test light or voltmeter to find out which wire going to the pin switch is always hot even when the key isn't on.

The red wire needs to be connected to a wire that only has power when the key is turned on. It is probably connected to the right wire from the truck. Just leave it the way it is and disconnect the yellow wire from it and relocate as stated above.

GOOD LUCK!

the constant wire needs to be hooked straight up to your battery. there should be a constant hot wire in your dash somewhere if you cant find it just use some new wire and run it straight off the battery. you should run it through your fuse panel or any easier way of doing it is putting one of those little in line kinda fuses in the wire i usually put it in the engine compartment. (so you dont have topull the deck out to replace it =)

Try Sony's website, I did on the Blazer when I bought it.

Has radio with a 10 disk CD changer in it. Found the owners manual and wiring diagram and downloaded it.
