Did I buy the wrong thing for my 72?
I bought a HEI ignition on e-bay:
click here to see it and I had read about the one wire hookup and seen the vacuum advance stuff. This think has a bunch of wires coming out of it and no vacuum connection. Did I screw up? |

I had a sinking feeling when I looked closely at it. I'm new to this chevy stuff. I guess it isn't salvagable with something like a MSD 6A or such is it? Better to just find another one?

Ok, so maybe I'm stupid, but it looks just like all the other HEI's I've ever seen.
Don't those wires just plug into each other? (see the circles connected by the line) I seem to remember some wires plugging into each other that were part of the HEI setup. And the "one wire" just plugs into where the arrow points. Todd |

I may have access to a MSD 6A and that's why I wondered if this thing could serve as the distributor and coil for it. |

One of the plugs goes into the cap, along with the one wire for power supply. The 4 wire plug is the computers timing control. Without a computer theres no advance on that distributor. MSD6a does not create advance either.

Are the distibutor bodies the same? I gotta vacuum advance off an HEI laying around here someplace if he could use it he can have it for the postage. That's assuming my kids haven't destoyed or lost it by now.

You could change module and add advance, but I think it would be simpler just to put it back on Ebay and buy the correct one--they are not hard to find.

That one doesnt have mechanical advance either. So you'd have to change the distributor shaft as well. Best bet is to resell and get the right one.
