700R4 Questions
Im considering buying a 85 - 88 1/2 ton 4x4 Suburban.
Can anyone tell me . . . . 1) What year they started using the 700R4 in Suburbans? 2) What years were the best / worst (any years I should stay away from) with the 700R4? Thanks! Darren

(1) 1982.
(2) '82-appx '85 were plagued with weakness & problems. in '88, they took care of a lot of the problems. '95-'96 they screwed them up again. Renamed the 4L60E, they tend to go out at low mileage from overheating due to internal slippage. Chances are, if you buy a 'burb with higher miles, it will have a rebuilt trans. already- and if it was done right, will be better with the updates that can & NEED to be done. |

i belive that it is later than 85 when they went to the 4L60, that is the updated good version of the 700R4, the 4L60E is fully eletronic.
