What oil do you use?
I know it was posted but I cant seem to find the link, what brand and weight oil do you guys use in your trucks?

I always use Havoline. 10w40/10w30 for Yeller and the Woody, depending on the season.

I use Chevron Delo 400 15w40 in my 85. Everything else I drive gets Chevron Supreme 10w30.

10w40 anything but synthetic is bad.
GM will void your warranty if they find your running it. 10w40 is 10w30 with a thickening agent that for the most part is parifin wax. It will collect up by the rings and gum them up. If you have to go thicker then go to 20w50 in the summer. It's a different grade oil and doesn't use the Parifin filler. That said if you have good oil pressure then stick with a 10w30. Running the thinker oil will cause the bearings to break down the oil and it will have less lubricating properties then the 10w30 ater a could thousand miles.

Ohh I run the Castrol high mile oil 10w30 in my Accord with 213000 and I also run it in my 75 K5. It's supose to swell the seals and help with oil loss. 75 burns it and the accord leaks it. LOL I run both at a 4-5k intervall. Accord is my DD and sees a lot of hwy but not much traffic. Oil in it now has 4k on it and still looks relativly clean concidering the miles. The GM's it would be pitch black by now. The 75 is actually a twice a year cycle. doesn't run but about 4k a year.
88 Burb tow rig 454 with 83k is running Mobile1 Sythetic at a 4,000 mile change interval when towing. I and converting it all to synthetic. Once we get the camper going doing a 4-5k trip over a 2 week period woild not be unlikely. Right now the 86 Toy with 22re is running straight 10w30 castrol till I see if it's using any oil. It has 195,000 miles on it. good compression still.

I've always used Quaker State in all of my vehicles. 5 or 10w30 in my '00 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab (95,000 miles) and in my wife's '98 Lumina (65,000 miles), and 10w40 in my '76 GMC (140,000 miles). I have used the High Mileage stuff, but found a good deal on the regular oil so I have a bunch of it now.
I change the oil in my Frontier every 3500-4000, most of it being highway; every 3000-3500 in the Lumina; and every 2500-3000 in the GMC (since it's so worn out and needs a rebuild). As important as the oil is the filter too. I use AC Delco in the GMC and Lumina, and Nissan filters in the Frontier. Mike |

I run castrol 20w50 synthblend year round still starts good even in the winter. I think it being a part synthetic makes it less thick than regular 20w50.

I was thinking about switching my truck to synthetic, I only have about 7k miles on it though (crate motor). Is it too early to run synthetic? Other than obvoiusly draining the pan/changing filter do I need to do anything else to switch to synthetic? How about tranny fluid? is it the same to change it to synthetic?

mobil 1 all the way, 10w30, thats what we put in everything, expect our 2002 2500HD with the 8.1, factory says 10W20, same stuff practically, my truck sence we are still braking in the engine gets 10W30 what ever.

I am currently using redline 5w30 in my truck. There is no wax added to oil. Polymeric viscosity index improvers, are added to oil to help resist thinning when heated, and therefore making a multi-grade oil. These VI improvers are actually a type of plastic. They are found in all conventional multigrade oils. 10w40 conventionals probably have the highest amount. These VI improvers do wear out, and therefore the oil becomes thinner at high temperatures. They can also leave deposits on the engine. If you wish to use a 40 weight conventional, then a 15w40 is a more stable oil. Synthetics have a higher natural viscosity index, and therefore don't need the same amount of VI improvers added. Some synthetics (mobil 1 10w30, redline 5w30, and 10w30) do not use any VI improvers. GM uses mobil 1 from the factory in quite a few models, and synthetic oil will not void the warranty, as long as it is API approved.

Most transmission fluids are not synthetics, although some of the newer proprietary fluids are synthetic blends........such as DC ATF-4, etc.

Castrol 10-30 with 2000 mi changes of both oil and filter. I tend to read every thing I run across on oils and within conventional oils there is less difference between brands then people generally think . There is a great deal of hype in oil advertising that leads people to believe their oil is light years ahead of what every one else is using and what they believe is often not really true . If your motor is in good condition use the weight the manufacturer recommended for that engine because the engine was designed to get maxium life with that viscosity , the designers try to break engines with different types of oils ,so I would think they know best. The most important thing to remember about oil is to keep it clean .

I use Walmart's SUPERTECH in my truck with about 200,000 mil, wifes Expedition with 160,000 mil, and daughter Integra with 250,000 mil. Have used it for years. I dont really think one oil is much better than the other, it has to do with change intervals. I change our oil every 4,000 miles. The Sheriff's Dept where I use to work changes oil in Patrol cars every 6,000 miles and we would put 300,000 miles on them Crown Vics and the way we beat the #e!! out of them. They use Valvoline. So is there actually a BETTER oil than the rest ???????

I think most all oils are good, & there have been tests done with NY City cabs to compare oils,couldnt come up with any stand out , or failure, actually one cab motor failed early, if I remember it was using Castrol, but that doesnt mean the oil caused the failure.
I use Citgo 10/40 in the truck & Carquest 10/30 in the Astro & wifes Montero Sport, & Carquest Filters (made by Purolator)

valvoline max life 10w 30 in Ol Red. Well at least thats what i just put in it, no idea what my dad kept in it. I also use Max Life ATF and something else, maybe brake fluid.

I use 0w-40 mobil 1 synthetic in the turbo charged beetle (manufacturer recommends it) and 10w-30 regular oil in the pickup.

I use Valvoline Max-life 10w-30. I would use Mobil 1, but it leaks enough oil - synthetic would go through it like a strainer. I use a K&N or AC Delco filter.
