Suggestions for my '68
What's up guy's .I don't know if you remember ,But I just got back a SWB step that my dad owned over 30 years ago.Now I don't know what to do.The paint is shot so that is no problem. The deal is everything on the truck is factory stock except the exhaust, wheels ,and an vintage after market A/C unit.It even has the orginial paint ( whats left) There is not one single dent in the truck ,trim, grill, even none in the inside of the bed .Should I go back original,or Put some creature comforts,Power steering ,Disc brakes ,and maybe lower it. I will never sell the truck again but I don't really want to mess up the value either as it will go to my son .Do you think you can give me a ball park figure on it's value.Jason (Hawaiianj) will be posting some pics for me soon .Just as soon as I get enough sense to get them to him................LOL Thanks guy's BTW this dang site is addictive ain't it?

I would restore back to an original look but ad some aftermarket wheels and all the "creature comforts" you want. If you are never going to sell it the ad what you want. Definatly put disc brakes and such. Lower it to. If I had a SWB I would bag it for show with a set of 20" and for everyday cruizing raise it up and roll on som clean 15"-17" rims.

Definatley keep all the trim. I would go for a two tone silver and white with a red interior.

It is rare to see a stepside with the chrome trim option. Post some pics of the glovebox option sheet or the build sheet if you can find it. The build sheet is usually hidden somewhere in the seat springs or behind gas tank or maybe inside the door.

If you're going to keep it forever, screw resale value, make it more enjoyable to drive.
Nowdays, disc brakes are a necessity. Adding discs, power steering and power brakes are going to make the truck lots more fun and not lower the value at all. Basically, if you're not using a saw or welder to do a mod, it's nothing to worry about. If you didn't like it, you could always return it to stock.

Yah, Discs, P/S, P/B, some tunes (you don't need to cut the dash) and lower that thing and you'll be well on your way!

Wow, I don't guess I've ever seen a stepside with the trim. I didn't think they came that way. Seeing how nice and original as it is, and with the history it has, personally, I would restore it to look original, and add some factory creature comforts. Like everyone else said, build it like you want it. As long as you don't cut it, you can't really hurt the value. Tasteful add ons will only improve it.

68C15,My young'n is 10 but I think he's going on 30.Man you could not believe the people that has been coming by my house and asking "Is that your dads old truck" It is to cool. When I got it home he came down to the house and said "watch this" He reached up under the dash and pulled out an envelope that had every dime he ever spent on the truck. How about them floor mats. He put them in the truck in 1969 whenI was heading across the pond .When I got home he had sold the truck.Jason thanks for all of your help in posting these pictures.I could not have done it without you..BTW ......It has only been registered to 3 people since new.I am going to put it back in my dads name.Any body got any suggestions let me know ............Thanks ....Alton
I did not know that the trim was rare. |

Wow, nice starting point! The truck looks really solid. If the plans are to keep it forever, just add the creature comforts and don't look back. And clean that floormat up and use it, that's such a classic!!!

Well my opinion differs a bit from everyone else. I say RAT ROD THE HELL OUTTA IT!!! Loo at the perfect Patina finish on the truck already!! I say lower it 3" up front and 5" out back, painted steelies, wide whites, killer exhaust and drive it bud!! I'm a bit partial to the Rat Rod look
